Forum of Private Business just one quick point I want to make about the budget! The biggest cheer during the whole thing was when the chancellor announced a 1p drop in beer duty! Why? And please don’t post “your pint will be 1p cheaper in your local!” The duty saving goes to those producing the beer, the brewers large and small, but will the brewers pass this saving on to a pub?. 1p is small beer (pardon the pun) to a beer drinker, could help a pub at these difficult times, but if you are a big brewery producing 300+ million pints of beer a year it’s a bit more significant! But is it worth passing on?

It feels almost like every other day, news comes in of another great Australian independent brewer closing down. While certain economic factors are at play, there are calls for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to reexamine the lack of competition within the industry. You are at the beach and want a beer. Local ordinances allow for only one beer vendor on the beach. Turns out, a lot of beach goers also want a beer. The line is long. The price was $20 a beer but seeing the long line, the beer vendor raises the price to $25 a beer. People get mad. They shout “you’re price gouging us!” But as fate would have it, You are a local politician. You can solve this problem. Do you: (1) give everyone in line, and anyone else who wants a beer, $15 (2) blame the beer vendor for price gouging and withholding the supply of beer on a hot summer day (3) change local ordinances to allow more beer vendors on the beach

Beer sales were at an all time low in 2023 as consumers are shifting behaviors. Some of those behaviors are due missteps in comms by the brands who have left the safe harbor of staying focused on their target consumers. At the same time consumers are experiencing unprecedented choice. Brands have to give a clear reason for being chosen. Wine, beer, spirits; consumers need a roadmap to your brand but it can’t be that the brand caters to everyone. It’s the oldest message in brand development but the one most often forgotten by marketing teams chasing shiny objects. Choose your demographic target carefully and CARE for that relationship with consistency and presence. Too many directions will lose your core customer faster today than in any other time in history. Up until this Sunday's marquee matchup in Las Vegas, the beer industry has largely been on defense the past two years. 🍺 U.S. beer shipments fell to a 25-year low in 2023, according to new data out of BofA Securities, as politically and culturally-driven boycotts and consumer tastes shifting to hard seltzers and liquor have pressured industry sales.
