Sarah Joseph makes a very powerful argument. But I am not convinced that the social media ban is disproportionate. We have to ask: does the ban show disregard or contempt to children’s right to political communication? And it is not obvious that it does. Social media is not the only way in which teenagers can be informed about politics. In fact, it is often a poor and superficial way to do so. Nor is it the only means through which teenagers can campaign about political issues. They can set up websites and use other online resources. The harm to children’s mental health is a given. By contrast, the harm to their freedom to political communication is not. The likely effect of a ban is that teenagers’ political engagement will simply change location, not diminish. Sarah is right that a lesser restrictive alternative is available: platforms can introduce better safeguards to prevent harm. But it seems unlikely at the moment that platforms will implement such safeguards effectively, given that there is a huge financial incentive for them not to do so.

The media plays a crucial role in the functioning of democracy, and its influence can significantly impact the health of democratic systems. Here are some key aspects of how media contributes to the dynamics of democracy: 1. **Information Dissemination**: Media serves as a primary source of information for the public, helping citizens stay informed about political processes, government actions, and societal issues. This transparency is vital for an informed electorate. 2. **Watchdog Function**: The media acts as a watchdog, holding government and public officials accountable. Investigative journalism can uncover corruption, abuse of power, and other malfeasances, thereby promoting accountability and integrity. 3. **Platform for Debate**: Media provides a platform for public discourse and debate, allowing diverse voices and opinions to be heard. This fosters a pluralistic society where different perspectives can coexist and be discussed. 4. **Shaping Public Opinion**: The media influences public opinion by framing issues and highlighting specific narratives. This can mobilize public engagement and activism but can also lead to polarization if biased reporting occurs. 5. **Facilitating Civic Engagement**: By covering political events, elections, and civic issues, media encourages citizens to participate in the democratic process, whether by voting, attending town hall meetings, or engaging in activism. 6. **Challenges to Democracy**: While media can strengthen democracy, it can also pose challenges. Misinformation, sensationalism, and biased reporting can undermine public trust and lead to the erosion of democratic norms. 7. **Digital Media and Democracy**: The rise of social media has transformed the media landscape, enabling rapid information sharing and engagement. However, it also raises concerns about echo chambers, misinformation, and the influence of algorithms on public discourse. In summary, the media is essential for the functioning of democracy, but its role is complex and multifaceted. Responsible journalism and media literacy are crucial for ensuring that media contributes positively to democratic processes.

In her contribution to Nieman Lab’s annual predictions for journalism package, D&S Director of Research Alice Marwick offers her forecast for 2025: The mainstream media will lose its last grip on relevancy, and the fundamental gap in understanding between partisan Americans will widen. Moving forward — and, she argues, decisively past the “disinformation” frame — “we should not be concerned with isolated incorrect facts, but with the deeply-rooted stories that circulate at all levels of culture and shape our points of view. The challenge for 2025 is to confront these deeper epistemic divides that shape how Americans understand the world; in other words, the ways we arrive at the knowledge that forms our perspective.” https://lnkd.in/e_dxPskw
