I find this quite interesting as a #graphicdesigner. In many indigenous warrior cultures, there are certain rites of passages you can only participate in after you made your first kill. One example is tattooing. Tattoos usually represent how fierce a warrior is, or how many kills they have in combat. Inversely, no one in that tribe or culture is getting a tattoo without a confirmed kill. If a man asks for a tattoo without a kill, I have no doubt he will be shamed by the people around him. Somehow, even those kind of cultures have a sense of authenticity. This sense of authenticity is very much alive in developed countries, and manifests itself in different forms, as the example below: non-combat vets investing in tactical gear essentially after time in service is up. And it’s recognizable. And it’s funny, because it’s inauthentic. So what does that mean for me, a graphic designer? Well, first, I have to recognize what’s authentic in the brand I am working on. Second, I need to deliberately create messaging that reflects that authenticity and divert from anything that is inauthentic. Third, I have to make sure my process remains consistent. Lastly and most importantly: don’t let anyone know I purchase tactical gear. And don’t ever get a high and tight.
Dare I say: THE ENTIRE REASON THE TACTICAL GEAR MARKET EXISTS? I will be the first to tell you that people put too much weight on “did I deploy or not?” My viewpoint has always been that if you raised your right hand, service is service. Deployment not required. But unfortunately, we have a ton of people who feel inadequate because they missed a deployment for one reason or another. Prior to 2001, if you wanted to look like a “trained killer”, you were reading Soldier of Fortune magazine and buying gear and crap from their classified section. But then we went to war, and millions of FOBBITs and others decided that the only way they would fit in at the local VFW was to roll up wearing their best COSPLAY of an “Operator” So of course the industry catered to them. No shame in the game. Just really easy to spot in the wild. So, I guess thank you for self-identification. The rest of us just want a beverage, man. Stay caffeinated. Aerial Resupply Coffee®
