🌍 Last week, I attended the International Medicinal Mushroom Conference in Bari, Italy. It underscored three main points for me: 1️⃣ Fungi-based health innovations: There is a vibrant research landscape advancing the use of traditional medicinal fungi in modern nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. 2️⃣ Fungi are essential to the bioeconomy: Their ability to consume diverse feedstocks and produce a variety of bio-based chemicals make them very attractive for industrial innovations. 3️⃣ The potential is vast: From bioprospecting for new species and compounds to avant-garde genetic techniques, there is so much untapped potential in this area. 🍄 #Bioeconomy #Fungi

I am pleased to announce the publication of my latest research in Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies, now in pre-proof format, entitled: 📄Enhancing the Bioactivity of Dunaliella salina Extract through Ultra-High Pressure Supercritical Fluid Extraction (UHP-SFE) In this study focuses on optimizing the extraction process for Dunaliella salina, a microalga known for its high concentration of beta carotene cis and trans isomers. By employing Ultra-High Pressure Supercritical Fluid Extraction (UHP-SFE) within the 50-100 MPa range, we achieved a significant increase in the concentration of neuroprotective bioactive compounds. Specifically, our method produced an extract containing over 60% beta carotene in half the time required by conventional pressure extraction methods, without the use of co-solvents or modifiers. 🌱🤝🌱 Teamwork makes the dream work: in the world of extracts, too! Together with colleagues at Alternative Plants and FIELD AND FOREST, SIA, we have created a cosmetic ingredient based on extracts of juniper (Juniperus communis) and chamomile (Matricaria recutita) processing byproducts. Both extracts are valuable on their own. But, once they join forces, the power multiplies! ⚗️The ingredient has robust antioxidative properties, it stimulates keratinocyte proliferation, along with regulating collagen type I and matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) production. Unlocking Onion Peel's Hidden Potential Thrilled to share my latest research on characterizing and evaluating antioxidant potential of onion peel extracts from eight short-day onion varieties Key Findings: 1. Identified 49 polyphenolic compounds, including anthocyanins, flavanols, and flavones. 2. Anthocyanin-rich onion peels exhibit high antioxidant activity. 3. Dark red varieties show the highest total phenol content and antioxidant activity. 4. Do distal mutations matter when improving an enzyme? The answer: YES! In this new study, we used our tool Zymspot to improve the NOV1* enzyme based on distal hotspots. These were the main achievements: → 10-fold increase in activity → 40-fold higher operational stability → 90–100 % immobilization efficiency in metal affinity resins → Vanillin yield: 2.5 times higher (All compared to the wild type) *NOV1 is a bacterial dioxygenase used in this study for the one-step oxidation of the lignin-derived isoeugenol into vanillin, the flavoring agent used in food, cleaning products, cosmetics or pharma.
