Under the aegis of Samarth by Hyundai Motor India Ltd., the Samarth Assistive Devices Conclave stands as a unique and transformative initiative dedicated to creating a more inclusive and equal society for persons with disabilities. Our Executive Director, Arman Ali, joined esteemed panelists Vineet Saraiwala, Founder & CEO of Atypical Advantage, Prateek Madhav, Co-founder & CEO of AssisTech Foundation (ATF) and Tarun Garg, COO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd. The session was anchored by Ritu Singh from CNBC-TV18. The discussions centred on enabling inclusion through assistive devices and the various challenges India faces in this field. It was highlighted that the penetration level of assistive devices in India is a mere 3%, underscoring the urgent need for greater outreach and accessibility. The panelists addressed the significant gap between assistive technology needs and access to services, particularly emphasizing the higher demand for these devices in rural areas. One of the key challenges discussed was the difficulty in creating awareness about assistive technologies and making them affordable for the masses. The conversation also touched upon the stigma associated with the usage of assistive devices in today's society and the need to defeat these prejudices to promote wider acceptance. Additionally, the panellists identified several shortfalls in the assistive technology ecosystem in India, including the fact that health insurance in the country does not cover assistive devices, which adds to the financial burden on individuals requiring these technologies. Despite these challenges, the conclave shed light on the immense potential within the assistive technology space in India. The collaborative efforts of industry leaders, policymakers, and disability advocates are crucial to harness this potential and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive. A heartfelt thank you to Hyundai for sponsoring this impactful event and to all the panellists and participants for their invaluable contributions. With nearly 150 million people in India living with disabilities, inclusion remains a significant challenge. Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) face barriers from inaccessible infrastructure and limited social security to employment discrimination and societal stigma. Despite the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, implementation gaps continue to limit full participation and dignity for many. The Samarth initiative by Hyundai Motor India Ltd., in partnership with NDTV, conducted an in-depth analysis of some of these issues in "The State of Disability in India", co-authored by the Nipman Foundation and Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC). By examining core areas—such as infrastructure accessibility, social security, political prioritization, employment, and public awareness—the white paper outlines a Charter of Recommendations. This Charter calls for strengthened legislation, accessible urban planning, investment in assistive technology, and broader public awareness to transform perceptions and create genuine opportunities. 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩'𝐬 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝🥇 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐬, 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭, 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲? At first glance, this seems absurd. How could a javelin throw on the global stage transform everyday issues like infrastructure, crime, and social justice? But the answer lies not in the javelin itself, but in what Navdeep’s gold medal represents: resilience, empathy, and the power of shared responsibility. Think about it: Would potholes still be the cause of 12 deaths/day on our roads every year if contractors were guided by empathy and a sense of shared responsibility? Would they cut corners, or would they ensure roads are safe and built to last? Now, consider this: How would the lives of 30 million abandoned children in India be transformed if empathy drove institutional care? Instead of merely surviving, these children would grow up supported and empowered, with real opportunities to thrive. And what about the angry bus conductor, the stressed corporate worker, or the frustrated traffic cop? Would we still lose productivity due to mental health issues if empathy and shared responsibility were the norms in work environments? Addressing these issues goes beyond empathy alone; it requires tangible actions that create a lasting cultural shift. Simply building ramps at parks won’t be enough—we need to start early. Introducing empathy-driven curriculums and inclusive play between differently-abled and able-bodied children, teaching respect for unique strengths instead of pity. Embedding empathy as a core value, we can raise a generation for whom inclusion is the norm, not the exception. For the us organising "experience-sharing days" where able-bodied people navigate the world in the shoes of a differently-abled person—whether through using a wheelchair or experiencing temporary sensory impairments—can cultivate empathy not through pity but through understanding. These efforts go beyond symbolic gestures like building ramps. Empathy-driven education and collaborative experiences, are just a few ways we can reshape how society perceives differently-abled individuals. Navdeep’s gold or for that matter all 29 medals are living proof of what’s possible when we prioritise the collective good. Hence I feel we as a nation need to invest in creating more paralympic HEROES. These medal’s are a question for us: What kind of world do we want to live in? Empathetic and Resilient or Judgemental and Irresponsible #India #NavdeepSingh #Paralympic #IndiaGrowthStory

The accessibility left by the Paris Olympics in Paris The Paris Olympics saw the implementation of many inclusive measures for people with disabilities, such as the introduction of the latest technology (Touch2See) that allows visually impaired people to experience the thrill of ball games. Among the infrastructures that are likely to remain in Paris are the barrier-free ramps at bus stops. Over the three years since 2021, barrier-free ramps have been installed at 1,750 bus stops. The development of such infrastructure is not a one-time effort but is expected to continue supporting the elderly and parents with strollers sustainably. In this way, inclusive development for people with disabilities benefits not only those with disabilities but society as a whole. #accessiblecode #socialinclusion #accessibility #sustainability https://lnkd.in/dzGa5QH7
