While specific weed species can help boost #agrobiodiversity and protect the fields from erosion, they usually cause significant yield losses during crop production. To efficiently manage these "unwanted" plant species, we need to adopt a holistic approach, combining suitable and different control practices (and altering them from time to time to avoid the adaptability of the weeds). 🌾 👩🌾 #weedcontrol #sustainableagriculture #farming
An important and complex topic. The least bad definition of a #weed is an unwanted plant and competition and weeding costs can indeed be a big problem. Still, the same species can benefit by conserving soil, water, nutrient, carbon and natural enemies to pests. The stage and amount matter and some times the species. In Africa they are widely valued as cover crops for fodder and soil fertility, and in Denmark seeding (nutrient) selected catch crops is mandatory also in "conventional" farming to prevent N and P pollution. Weeds play an important role in sustainable farming practices. Soil water retention is just one of them.
