Thrilled to share that I have completed my graduation in bharatnatyam through Pracheen Kala Kendra - India It’s been a tough and exhilarating journey. Years of hardwork and patience poured with correct guidance and mentorship by my guru Saraswati mam. Beginning a new chapter in my life and proudly a bharatnatyam graduate now. I would also like to address a a major problem that I encountered during this duration. Delhi University’s recent decision of maintaining 60% attendance actually impacted a lot of students. The idea of college to me was not just to gain knowledge but also to explore and understand my artistic and academic abilities. This attendance rule was brought in to cage students. College is meant to embrace and explore sides of life that interests you and not just force feed students textual knowledge. As a person with a very artistic background it was quite difficult for me to balance out both academics and art. Especially NEP’s continuous assessment format. It recquired us to be looped into college on a daily basis to ensure good grades. But is college just really made to repress a student’s extracurricular abilities. I was also a part of my college’s dance soceity for a good one and a half year. The constant shaming and taunting by teachers never stopped as we were the students who they assumed were of no use in the batch. We were representing our college on levels and pressures that a regular class going student would have never tackled. Why to make places like Delhi university which is considered a hub for artistic and powerful students just confined to this? Are we still prioritising textual knowledge over real life challenges and experiences? 📚 The Evolution of Education in India: From Gurukuls to Modern Classrooms 📚 The Indian education system has a rich legacy, rooted in the ancient traditions of the Gurukuls and Vedic learning. In those days, education was more than just acquiring knowledge; it was a way of life. Students lived with their gurus, immersed in learning not just academic subjects, but also values, discipline, and holistic development. 🏡 Gurukuls and Vedic Learning In the traditional Gurukul system, students learned from their gurus in a natural, open environment. The curriculum covered the Vedas, philosophy, music, martial arts, and practical life skills. Learning was personalized, with the guru mentoring each student according to their individual strengths and areas for growth. The focus was on holistic development—shaping character, building discipline, and fostering a deep connection with nature and spirituality. 📈 Modern Education System Today, the Indian education system has evolved to become more structured and institutionalized, focusing on standardized curricula, exams, and career-oriented courses. The emphasis is largely on academic performance and technical skills. While technology has made learning more accessible, there is a growing concern that modern education often prioritizes rote learning over critical thinking, and career preparation over life skills. 🔍 What Have We Gained, and What Have We Lost? The shift to modern education has brought about mass literacy, advanced research, and opportunities in diverse fields. However, the emphasis on grades and competition sometimes overshadows the development of essential life skills and values that were central to the Gurukul system. The personal bond between the guru and shishya (teacher and student) is often missing, replaced by large classrooms and digital screens. Perhaps it's time to revisit the essence of holistic learning from our ancient traditions. Can we integrate the best of both worlds—modern technology with the timeless values of the Gurukul system? Supported by the National Payments Corporation Of India (NPCI) through its CSR initiative, we have successfully established a Mini Science Centre that is transforming the educational landscape for our students. . In this centre, students engage with a variety of hands-on models, including the captivating Floating Magnets. This interactive learning tool not only enhances their understanding of magnetic forces but also stimulates their curiosity and love for science. It’s incredible to witness the excitement and enthusiasm as they explore fundamental concepts through practical experiments. . The Floating Magnets model is designed to provide students with a visual and tactile experience, making abstract scientific principles more accessible.
