When we’re passionate about breaking down barriers for women in traditionally male dominated sectors, it’s easy to find ourselves despairing at the lack of progress. So I wanted to share a positive story! On Saturday, I picked my older daughter up from the Curious Minds National STEM camp in Canberra. This week long camp (and a concurrent camp in Adelaide) was the culmination of an amazing nine month program run by Australian Science Innovations, Australian Maths Trust, Australian Government Department of Education and The Australian National University. Over 100 young women from high schools across Australia have participated in two week long camps and six months of individual mentoring by volunteer female scientists, (with virtually no financial cost). They’ve done experiments, learnt about careers in STEM and met inspiring women STEM leaders, including Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley. Hearing my daughter and her new friends’ excitement as they talk about future careers in STEM at the end of the program makes my heart sing for this next generation of young women. This program has been running for nine years and has inspired and supported hundreds of young women. I hope government will continue to fund and support it into the future. And in the meantime I thank all involved in the program (teachers, organisers, mentors) for giving their time and energy to help break down barriers for our young women in STEM. #womeninstem #superstarsofstem #education #mentoring #womeninscience #diversityinstem #futurescientists #genderequality

Great Indigenous led research on boosting Indigenous participation in STEM! It's the largest survey of its type - they heard from 204 people from 98 different nations and found lots of positivity around potential STEM careers. One responder said "I believe STEM can provide more opportunities for our future generations in education, cultural equality and industry advancement." However, only 1 in 3 responders feel Indigenous people are supported to pursue STEM careers. Check out the full report to see their 15 recommendations on boosting Indigenous STEM engagement.

This free workshop hosted by Science & Technology Awareness Network | Réseau de sensibilisation aux sciences et à la technologie is starting in a couple minutes! Join us for : Advancing STEM Equity: Facilitating STEM Pathways The importance of a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education continues to grow as it is connected to enhanced career options, future economic well-being, and the development of critical skills. However, research has shown that Black and other racialized youth residing in low-income communities experience significant and complex barriers to participation, resulting in their underrepresentation in STEM fields and research. Classroom teachers can play a critical role in addressing these disparities. How can we create spaces where all youth can be inspired to pursue and persist in STEM? How can we specifically support marginalized students in STEM? The 'Advancing STEM Equity’ is an informational session that focuses on the work of Visions of Science to foster equitable STEM learning environments. Educators will gain insights into the transformative impact of equity in STEM and understand their critical role in promoting STEM persistence amongst youth. At weavr., we stand at the intersection of #technology 💻 and #Culture 🪃, committed to #weaving the strengths of our Traditional ways 🌿 with the potential of the digital future🤖. ⭐️ A recent discussion highlights a critical barrier in #STEM fields: the dominance of Western definitions and frameworks that often sideline #Indigenous perspectives and contributions. 💡 This exclusion is not just a loss for #IndigenousCommunities but for the entire STEM ecosystem, which misses out on the rich, diverse insights and innovations that Indigenous knowledge systems can offer. 🌱 Our experiences underscore the importance of redefining STEM to be more #inclusive, recognising the value of knowledge that comes from a deep connection to land, community, and tradition. 🌏 As we move forward, our mission is to not only increase Indigenous participation in STEM but to transform these fields in ways that respect and incorporate Indigenous worldviews. 👩🏽💻 We invite partners, educators, and the tech community to join us in this journey towards a more inclusive and holistic approach to STEM education and innovation. 🫱🏻🫲🏾 Together, let's redefine the future of technology, grounded in the wisdom of our ancestors and open to the contributions of all. Hermanas Diseña Tu Futuro: 20 Years of Impact In 2005, the program “Hermanas: Diseña Tu Futuro” (Sisters: Design Your Future) was created with three core goals: demystifying STEM, making it more accessible, and offering an invitation to girls who are often excluded from these opportunities. This innovative model focuses on addressing the needs of young women who typically don't get the chance to participate. The one-day conference introduces girls to various engineering fields, offers hands-on experiences, and provides informational sessions on preparing for academic and professional success, all within a safe, welcoming, and collaborative environment. This program continues to produce results and outcomes to this day. The design of the program was shaped by the realization that many girls are never invited to join STEM initiatives. Those who don’t show an interest in math, struggle academically, or fail to capture someone’s attention often miss out on these opportunities. For this reason, it was crucial to ensure the program reached girls who might otherwise never be included—those who may not excel in math or science, or who face challenges like family or financial issues, peer pressure, or other social struggles. The aim was to create an experience for girls who might never have the chance to engage with STEM unless they felt valued and motivated to participate. Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones! Access “The STEM Podium” Blog to be inspired by two stories of impact.

This is a helpful guide when program planning STEM experiences. I like the way it focuses on three important outcomes and provides specific and actionable strategies educators can use to achieve those outcomes. It's realistic and flexible while providing powerful ways to create spaces that serve all learners.
We partnered with @ngcproject (NGCP) and national experts, to develop the Access to STEM Framework. This guide is designed to help increase access to STEM for underrepresented youth and improving the quality of out-of-school STEM programs.
