Cannes Lions: It's that time of year again, and the Rogue Bees are out in force. 😎 "Rogue Bees" is such a useful idea, popularised by the inimitable Rory Sutherland. It resonates deeply in the world of creativity. Rogue bees are those daring honeybees - yes, actual little buzzing hardworking bees 🐝 - whose whole job is to COMPLETELY IGNORE their genetically hardwired mission to find nectar and instead seek out new and unexpected sources. In bee world, most follow the poetically-named waggle dance to known sources of pollen. But these rogues ignore the dance, and zigzag off to discover unknown riches. There aren't many of them, but their role is vital, and it means the hive both survives and thrives. The point is simple: if we all played it safe, we'd never discover anything new. Flying in a metaphorical straight line leads to mediocrity, and never seeing the yet unseen. Pushing the boundaries – like our honeybee friends – redefines what’s possible and uncovers unthinkable solutions.🍭 People have said smarter things about this idea and managing risk, but for me, the best of it is about creativity and staying curious. 😉 Those tiny creative rebels have got their pollen-covered bums all over this years' entries. I’ll leave it to the actual creatives to round up the best, but enjoy the LinkedIn rabbit hole while the festival is on. Try to be just a little bit more rogue bee, and celebrate those among us.🌟 #CannesLions #Creativity #Innovation #RogueBees #Marketing #BoldIdeas

Today's WeeklyLT expands on posts from the past two weeks by leveraging Jane Goodall’s life, legacy & research to remind us: “THERE IS NOT A MAJOR GAP BETWEEN US & ALL OTHER ANIMALS.” The prior two posts I’ve written have alluded to our IMPROPER USE OF TECHNOLOGY, ESPECIALLY OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS FOLLOWING THE LAUNCH OF MOBILE DEVICES & SOCIAL MEDIA. THIS MISUSE IS WIDENING THE GAP – FOR THE WORSE. OUR MOVEMENT, SOCIAL CONNECTIONS & OVERALL HEALTH & HAPPINESS ARE NOT TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. As a reminder for those unfamiliar, Jane Goodall (now 90) is a British primatologist, ethologist & anthropologist, renowned for her groundbreaking work in the study of chimpanzees. She has extensively researched & documented (written & video) the social & family interactions of wild chimpanzees throughout her lifetime & proved to us that: 1 – Chimpanzees make & use tools (ie, using of sticks to extract termites), a trait that society previously thought to be uniquely human. 2 – Chimpanzees are not strictly vegetarians; they hunt & eat meat, often engaging in cooperative hunting to catch prey such as monkeys. 3 – They have intricate social structures & relationships; Goodall observed behaviours including grooming, forming alliances & establishing hierarchies within their communities. 4 – They exhibit a range of emotions similar to humans, expressing joy, sorrow, anger & affection. 5 – They engage in play, form close bonds with family members & grieve the loss of loved ones. 6 – They can be aggressive & violent, engaging in conflict & wars between other groups, BUT they also show reconciliation behaviours such as kissing & embracing after conflicts. https://lnkd.in/gzeJTV_b I'm glad my kids got to learn about Jane Goodall & chimpanzees this week as part of their camp by watching a film about her. “CHIMPANZEES ARE LIKE US BIOLOGICALLY – OUR CLOSEST LIVING RELATIVES. WE HUMANS ARE A PART OF, AND NOT SEPARATED FROM THE REST OF THE ANIMAL KINGDOM” (Jane Goodall). PERHAPS WE NEED TO GO BACK TO OUR ROOTS. BACK TO OUR CORE. BACK TO WHERE WE CAME FROM? A little less use of technology, coupled with more movement, whole foods, social connections & time outdoors can go a long way in raising our overall health & happiness. That’s my plan for this beautiful Sunday. Pass it along. We owe this to ourselves, & most importantly, our children.
How Jane Goodall Changed the Relationship Between Humans and Animals

Join me, 🍇 Emma Earley, 🍇 Kirstin Hunter, 🍇 Paloma Newton, and Lucy Wark as we unpack advice from stories of harassment, bullying, and abuses of power submitted by the Sunrise audience. This is where we need your help. If you’d like to share a story with us to discuss live at Sunrise, you can submit it to www.askthegrapevine.com with "Live at Sunrise" at the beginning of your submission. The time has come! Zoo Atlanta's pandas are leaving soon to go back to China. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to work alongside these wonderful pandas during my time at Zoo Atlanta. These bears made a positive impact on many people’s lives. When joy was hard to find, it could always be found in the giant panda exhibit! Pandas were the perfect pandemic distraction. No matter what was going on in the world, you could count on Yang Yang going into a food coma after feasting on bamboo. You knew Xi Lun and Ya Lun would erupt into playful chases. You could predict that one of those two girls would engage in what can only be described as bamboo tug-of-war. One sister would proceed to “share” their sister’s bamboo by not so subtly grabbing the bamboo while her sister was eating it, only to have her sister yank the stick back. This cycle would repeat until one of girls gave up. And you could always count on all four pandas to fall asleep in the most awkward positions. Pandas also gave us permission to accept the lesser heroic qualities of ourselves. During the pandemic it seemed time slowed down. However, as guests came to find out, pandemic time was still faster than panda time! A panda roughly splits up their day into the following: They focus on food for about 14 hours and use the restroom 100 times a day. They also sleep for 10 hours a day and often, much to satisfaction of guests, in broad daylight! The connection was routinely made that if a panda could “waste” so much time just eating and sleeping, we were more than entitled to relax on our couches, feast on our favorite snacks, and binge-watch our TV shows for hours. In short, pandas lowered the bar of productivity so far that just about anything we did was an improvement. Thank you, pandas. Thank you for making the pandemic easier and for being an entertaining reminder that conservation works (remember that when you vote!). #pandas #AZA #ZooAtlanta #Conservation

🌱 As we approach Easter, it’s essential to reflect on the symbols and traditions we uphold, especially in light of our evolving understanding of sustainability and compassion towards all beings. 🐑 In the past, lambs have been synonymous with Easter, representing innocence and new life. However, in this historic period where our planet faces environmental challenges and the ethics of consuming animals are questioned, it’s time to reconsider this symbolism. The reality is, our current consumption of animal products is not sustainable. The environmental impact of meat production, including the carbon emissions, land use, and water consumption, is staggering. Moreover, the treatment of animals in the meat industry very often falls short of ethical standards. As we strive towards a more sustainable and compassionate future, it’s crucial to reevaluate our traditions and symbols. Instead of perpetuating the idea of animals as commodities, let’s embrace symbols that align with our values of sustainability, compassion, and respect for all life. This Easter, let’s celebrate renewal and new beginnings in ways that honor our commitment to a more sustainable and compassionate world. 🌍💚 #Easter #Sustainability #Compassion #NewBeginnings

I'm chuffed to bits to show off PardiGras.org, a map-focused social media app that connects Mardi Gras attendees and provides information about essential services and conveniences within the shape-shifting context of a large public event. Click the link below to check out a demo version of the app, where you'll learn about the app's functionality and contours. I want to thank and congratulate my collaborators: Geremy Fisher, James Sheppard, Alex Beasley and Gretchen Neuenhaus. Their creativity, compassion, grit and technical expertise combined into an incredible, indelible, inedible sauce that smothered Pardi Gras with homemade NOLA flavor. Y'all rock hard. Same goes to the folks at Operation Spark. About the app: on one side, Pardi Gras empowers users to coordinate their day with friends and stay informed about the event's goings-on. On the other side, Pardi Gras provides NOLA businesses with a targeted advertising platform for connecting with potential customers. An economic impact study of 2023's Mardi Gras estimates that out-of-town visitors' non-lodging expenses tallied $57 million. These visitors fit a unique profile: they're in an unfamiliar and dynamic environment, they're confined to a particular area in virtue of attending the event, and they're ready to spend. Pardi Gras provides value to its users by reducing discovery friction for those normal purchases occurring in an abnormal setting, and provides value to its advertisers by informing event attendees of their nearby services. I'd love to connect with planners of large events or festivals to see how this concept could work in other event contexts and communities, and would greatly appreciate your sharing those connections in the comments below. Cheers! 😎
