Hello, my awesome LinkedIn family, friends, connections! Gotta share a thought here. Recently, I lost focus on my journey to join the cyber defenders of the world from the horrible, troublesome, no good "Bad people" in cyberspace. After a lot of discussion with my Wife and the appearance of an opportunity to get back on track, I stepped away from my job to study and prep for an interview. I was able to obtain a couple certifications in the process. 🎉 Yay! 🎉 But I learned the hard way, that was not enough for this position at this time. 😶 Bummer. 😕 Short and sweet, I am missing the practical knowledge. Fair enough. I'll tough back to this in a moment. I haven't been idle in the replacement of my last job, I have been applying where I can and have had multiple interviews of the last few weeks. During the application part, I am noticing that most employers are now requesting the LinkedIn link these days. Not thinking about it, I would just add it and move on. After watching a few YouTube videos of my favorite influencers, I am very much in the understanding that recruiters are looking at LinkedIn as not just a way to find potential applicants, but a "Live" version of your resume. 🤔 Wow, have I been dropping the ball there. So, armed with this knowledge, I am going to be changing things up a touch here. For a great many of you, I am deeply sorry and I understand if you "Disconnect" in the near future. For those of you that hang in with me, I hope this is mildly entertaining for you. But I am going to post updates of my journey in gaining practical knowledge. Not just for future jobs, but in hopes that someone watching my struggles will help to find a way to make a path into a nearly impossible to "Break into" field that is desperately seeking help, slightly more possible for those that follow. Thank you! I love, like, accept, tolerate, loath you all in your own special way. Time to get to work! Learning! Teaching! Something!

636. That’s the number of jobs I’ve applied to so far. And that's only on LinkedIn, not counting other platforms like Xing, Indeed, and Stepstone The kicker? No callbacks. No messages. Absolutely nothing. Am I frustrated by the search? Yes. Will it keep going? Of course. In fact, I feel like I haven’t even been applying enough. 636 feels like a very low number. I’m only 22, and ever since I figured out what I wanted to start my career in, I’ve been consistently applying to jobs. Unfortunately, this process requires patience, resilience, and a very thick skin. My inbox is full of rejection emails. Not the first time I've been rejected but it is kinda sad to look at it almost every day. And as I mentioned, it’s frustrating. Applying to jobs every day, and crafting customized cover letters - it takes a heavy toll. It’s tiring. Right now, the only constant in my life is applying to jobs while working on improving my skills in cybersecurity. I’ve decided to audit the Google Cybersecurity course for a bit to strengthen my basics before moving forward, while also progressing through the Mosse course. I won't get the Google cert but at least, my knowledge is being improved. As I've spoken to so many wonderful people in the field, hunting certs is not worth all that much compared to what you do. Meanwhile, I’m trying to juggle gaining knowledge, applying to jobs, learning German, and pursuing my Master’s degree. It’s exhausting. But sometimes, what we want in life requires us to strive beyond what feels possible. Even though I want this deeply for myself, I want it even more for my family, giving them the absolute best I can provide them with. I guess this is what being an adult entails. I sincerely hope that, eventually, one of these challenges gets replaced by an opportunity - a breakthrough, a chance to grow, or the career I’ve been working toward. To those who’ve been in a similar situation: how do you stay motivated when the process feels never-ending? Let’s talk in the comments. I’d love to hear your advice.

It’s not always the best person who gets the job. It’s the one whose CV makes it past HR, Talent Acquisition, recruiters, the dreaded ATS filters, and then nails the interview. The reality is, most of us aren’t taught these critical skills. Last year, we launched CyberSecCareers.Community, and in a short time, we gained 500+ members and learned some invaluable lessons. I knew I wanted to help people, but honestly, it took me some time to figure out what this platform could become. That time is now. Next week, we’re relaunching the platform with new tools, techniques, and support to help you land your next job and build the skills to achieve your long-term career goals. This isn’t just about finding your next role; it’s about empowering you with the resources that aren’t taught in classrooms but are crucial for success in cybersecurity. What’s included in the subscription membership: • Exclusive job opportunities • Tailored content that addresses your career journey • Weekly webinars • Podcasts featuring insights from top professionals • Access to paid courses designed to elevate your skills • One-on-one coaching sessions for personalised guidance I also want the content to be driven by the community—guided by your needs and requests. Why subscription? Making the platform financially sustainable will allow me to dedicate even more time to creating the content and resources that can genuinely help you. If you’ve enjoyed or benefited from my advice and content over the years, prepare for plenty more! Want to sign up? Send me a DM or visit the CyberSecCareers.Community page for more info.

Dear Reader Trying To Break Into Cybersecurity ❌ Getting your dream job doesn't happen by: Collecting every certificate you can Google Lying on your resume Keyword stuffing from the job ad ✔ What getting a tech job actually requires: Proof of education [yes, a cert or two will help] Work experience [even volunteer, or provable work for yourself] Soft skills and the demonstratable personality that comes with them I know because I hire tech people This approach got me 6 good tech jobs, and numerous consulting contracts over 25 years ❌ No more scanning the online jobs and watching for that email notification to come in with an offer It's time to reflect on exactly what career path you want. It's time to see what certifications you ACTUALLY need for THAT career path. It's time to get ANY relative experience you can. It's time to learn those soft skills (human skills) you need to get the job you really want. ⏩ If you want to learn more about the non-technical skills you'll need to land your dream tech job, check out my weekly newsletter. The Best Career Advice for Veterans in 2025 (Read this before you plan your year) Stop dreaming and procrastinating. Start setting goals. Dreams are inspiring, but goals will get you results. At Solve Transition, we believe in turning “what if” into “here’s how.” Here’s our simple, actionable framework to help you plan your next career move: 1️⃣ Set a Clear Goal (and believe in it) Instead of writing, “Land a job in cybersecurity,” write: “Secure a cybersecurity role by July 2025.” 2️⃣ Break It Down (take action) Add an overview of how you’ll get there: “Complete training, polish my resume, and build my network.” 3️⃣ Add Urgency and Measurability (set accountabilities) Split your goal into monthly tasks to stay on track: • January: Research training programs and enrol. • February: Complete LinkedIn profile updates. • March: Attend 2 networking events or webinars. • April: Apply to 5 targeted roles per week. This approach makes big goals manageable and achievable. 💡 At Solve Transition, we use this framework to guide veterans into successful cybersecurity careers. Dreams are great, but action creates change. Make 2025 the year you stop dreaming and start doing. It's not training anymore... this is it! P.S. DM us to take your FREE Capability Assessment and see what you can bring to the market. 👉 Ready to turn your dreams into reality? Message us today! #VeteranTransition #SolveTransition #GoalSetting
