TECHNOLOGY TUESDAY | Let's talk about the importance of balancing surfactant functionalities. Two key functionalities of surfactants are: 1) promoting oil mobility in the presence of water by lowering interfacial tension (IFT), and 2) altering rock wettability from oil-wet to water-wet by reducing the contact angle of a water droplet on an oil-saturated surface. However, these functionalities are often inversely related—focusing too much on lowering IFT can result in poor water-wetting performance. At Locus Bio-Energy, we take a balanced approach to product development, carefully optimizing our surfactants to deliver both functionalities effectively. Our #biosurfactant based solutions offer high-performance, multifunctional benefits, so you no longer have to choose between low IFT and water-wetting capabilities. In the example below, we compared the IFT and contact angle of one of our AssurEOR STIM products at various concentrations in Midcon crude oil. At concentrations above 0.05%v, AssurEOR STIM delivers IFT values below 1 mN/m while efficiently water wetting the surface. Want to learn more? Bio-based epoxidized oils are versatile chemicals, offering potential for biolubricants, polyols, and plasticizers, among other applications. In a study published in 'Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research', fatty acids and vegetable oils were epoxidized using a microwave-assisted method. The process employed heterogeneous acid catalysis and our Rotating Bed Reactor (RBR) to optimize mixing and heat transport, emphasizing catalyst choice and durability, and the role of peroxy acid mediators.
