I haven't posted anything about sport, culture and leadership for what feels like a lifetime, so what better time to restart than on the back of a 3-0 win for the Reds at Old Trafford... When I'm coaching leaders, I ask them to think about a few things: 1. What is your philosophy? 2. What does it feel like playing as part of your team? 3. How do you communicate those standards and expectations to your team? More often than not, people find those questions quite difficult to answer. Why? We're not used to thinking about them. A lot was said this weekend in the post match commentary about how Arne Slot seems to have introduced a new identity into his Liverpool team in a short space of time, in contrast to Eric Ten Hag who after a longer period of time doesn't seem to have a consistent philosophy. If you're a leader reading this, have a think about the questions above. If you're someone who runs an organisation, think about whether your leaders or managers know what good looks like for them, and what is expected. Crystal clarity on expectations is always a good thing anywhere in a business. Really great to speak to Don Armand from Sampson Armand Limited today. After a career in Rugby where be played for Stormers, Exeter Chiefs and England, Don has moved on from the game and after a brief interlude with an e-commerce business (we all know how hard start ups are, and how much you learn!) he now to focuses on Leadership development for CxOs. During our conversation he explained to me how he works with CEOs and MDs to provide an independent “ear”. What did I learn from Don? Leadership skills are transferable between sport and business. If you have led elite teams, you know what you are talking about. Don’s role is to listen, reflect, but expect you to work it out yourself by following sound leadership practices. Is Gareth Southgate a genius tactician? Master Strategist? Great leader? Lucky? I think we can learn a lot about leadership from Gareth Southgate through the Euro's 2024. All leaders are (or should be) measured by their results. Going into the event, if the goals were to 1. Qualify top of the group 2. Be unbetween 3. Progress through to the latter stages... 4. Win the competition Then he is doing a great job. Whilst the armchair managers and pundits have criticised the England performances, I would like to believe that Gareth and his team: - did their research and set the team up to play and beat each opponent - adapted to each situation - empowered the players to use their experience to find a solution - instilled a self belief to keep fighting, showing resilience and tenacity - have kept his opponents guessing In my opinion, all of these are skills of great leadership... ...and now, who cares! Those games are in the past, they were a stepping stone, part of the journey towards achieving their goals of getting to the final. I LOVE these lists/reflections. It applies on SO many levels. The one that comes to mind the most is amateur sports; think about how a recreational athlete, a performance athlete, a young coach, and a veteran coach frame this. Talent is essential, but actions on this list truly separate the best in class. - Sports parents, PLEASE support your athlete in being the best in class. - Coaches, PLEASE focus on developing the whole athlete to be a better human. - Boards, PLEASE support your operational leaders in developing this style of culture.
