Startups are difficult, plain and simple. But when you do not know or enjoy anything else, you go all in every time. Many things help you be successful. One of the most important is the companies and people who go out of their way to do business with you and your startup. It is much easier to pick up the phone and do business with the big logos or the ones you are accustomed to calling. I understand this and appreciate those who give startups a chance by breaking the norm. It does take a community, and to have the startup community we want in Bham, this is a necessity and unbelievably appreciated. Happy Monday RDSH. There is a Paul Graham (YC) article out now about 'Founder Mode' from a talk by Brian Chesky (AirBNB). It discusses the problem of hiring professional managers to scale your company and how that often doesn't work out. Worth a read. I have a similar guideline at the smaller end, roughly "Don't take advice from people that never bought their own pens" by which I mean that the bigCO Sales VP, the straight college to bigCO employee, the corporate only experience, may be lacking an understanding of what it takes to get the engine going. Their experience often started in an already running machine, with processes and policies defined by people they will never meet. Startup life is much more hands on and row as a team. There is a very tactical way to ensure a great hire at a startup. Some thoughts in order of importance... Talk to more people. 5 isn't enough. 30+ is better. Spend more time with them. Do real work with them. Contract with them. Attract savages. Be brutally transparent with your ambition in the process. They will likely be like you in temperment and intensity but different in skills. The people that appear natural have spent time practicing their speeches, recording themselves for review and having friends and peers critique. They also prepared for the follow-up questions. Being on the ball takes work.
