David Ellison's company Skydance will merge with Paramount Global placing the D. Ellison as chairman, CEO. His ability to produce profitable films is shown to be mixed with a few successes and failures. His father, Larry Ellison ponied up the $6 billion for the deal and as the majority stock holder, experts question if he will be involved and how much, specifically if his right wing politics will affect the CBS news division. The article notes that the younger Ellison has been putting money in the pockets of democrats. A bigger question is how silicon valley tycoons will be able to adapt to Hollywood and the TV/Film distribution game. CEO's of other legacy studios such as Warner Brothers and Disney have yet to figure out how to tackle the shift from cable to streaming and it's unclear how David will be able to lead Paramount in this effort, however it is possible that the family's background in tech could be a benefit as the other big tech companies who ventured into the TV game have been largely immune to the traditional studio's distribution woes by avoiding cable altogether. https://lnkd.in/g3V2Y9vF

Worth a quick read
The boardroom drama at Paramount Global is intensifying, and no reporter has been following it more closely than WSJ's Jessica Toonkel. Today, she reported exclusively on the latest major twist: the board and controlling shareholder are discussing a plan to remove CEO Bob Bakish and put in place a committee of top division heads to run the company on an interim basis. This is a stunning development, given that Paramount is exploring a sale right now and is in exclusive negotiations with Skydance Media. Stepping back, as Jessica explains, there is frustration within Paramount's upper ranks at how far this company -- with iconic brands like CBS, MTV and the Paramount film studio -- has fallen. Tens of billions of dollars of market value have evaporated in recent years. Bakish's supporters say he can hardly take all the blame, given the whole cable TV business is collapsing, and he has made some moves to put the company on the map in streaming. But the pressure on Bakish has mounted, as Jessica details in this piece.

One of Hollywood's oldest companies, Paramount Global, has agreed to merge with independent film studio Skydance Media which is owned by the son of the founder of software and database giant, Oracle. What does this mean for the future of the veteran Film and TV business and what will they learn from Oracle’s approach to doing business. Perhaps it will be like this: 1. If you want to watch the best Star Trek Movie (if you are wondering it’s The Undiscovered Country) you will now be required to purchase all the previous titles and prove that you have watched at least 5 of them within the first 180 days. 2. You know that time you watched a clip on You Tube of Tom Cruise jumping off a cliff top on a motorbike? Theres a bill in the mail for that. 3. Unless you have documented evidence that you have viewed at least 30 minutes of: · The Ten Commandments · Gunfight At the OK Corral · The Blob · Airplane Or · Footloose You will have to watch at least three episodes of Macgyver, or an entire season of Dynasty before accessing any further episodes of Frasier. #ITAM #licensing #licensingrules 😉 https://lnkd.in/eAuNuUxV
