The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has paused new offers for its Capital Grant scheme following a surge in applications and budget pressures, according to CAAV - Central Association of Agricultural Valuers. At StephensonsRural, we’re monitoring these developments to understand what this means for farmers and agricultural projects. Only recently, we helped secure 80% funding for a bespoke livestock handling facility, showing the difference these grants can make. It’s time to initiate regulatory reforms in Pakistan. Having worked on regulations across key economic sectors for quite some time, we are now one step closer to implementing the changes we once envisioned. During my research with my teacher and mentor, Dr. Ahmed Waqar Qasim, I was astonished by the regulatory burden on Pakistan’s agriculture sector. Currently, 146 regulations are imposed on the sector. To operate, businesses must complete 55 registrations, obtain 46 licenses, acquire 21 certificates, and secure 24 additional permissions in the form of NOCs or accreditations. To dig deeper into the agriculture sector, we segmented it into four key areas: Agri-Input Market, Agri-Food Processing & Value Addition, Livestock, and Crops & Fisheries. We then identified and mapped regulations within these sub-sectors. The BOARD OF INVESTMENT has taken a significant step forward by organizing a Public-Private Dialogue to bring together key stakeholders. This collaboration aims to drive regulatory reforms within each of these segments. Excited to see the positive changes this will bring to Pakistan’s agriculture sector! #RegulatoryReforms #AgricultreSector #Pakistan

#Switzerland is increasing its assistance to #Moldovan #agriculture. Through the #UN #Food and #Agriculture #Organization, Switzerland will provide financial #support of about $915,000 to improve food #security and sustain cattle herds in households affected by recent #droughts, which have severely reduced maize harvests—the main source of livestock fodder. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation is also adding $1,155,000 to the funds allocated to the project “#Emergency #Support for Agricultural Producers in the Context of the Socio-Economic, Climate, and Energy Crisis.”

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has immense agricultural potential, with 80 million hectares of arable land and a livestock potential equivalent to 40 million head of cattle. The government, supported by international partners, has drawn up strategies to develop sustainable agriculture and livestock farming, taking into account forest preservation and the promotion of savannah agriculture. Initiatives such as the Sustainable Agriculture and Livestock Management Program aim to strengthen the regulatory environment to encourage sustainable, low-deforestation agricultural investments. But what's the bottom line? Food self-sufficiency keeps galloping, the Global Poverty Index is still on course, and I wonder what needs to be done to reverse this trend. Is it a lack of effective agricultural planning? Or bad agricultural policy?

We should open our agriculture and livestock industry to allow more Australian farmers to enter PNG and invest in developing our large scale farming proposed project under BOOT Public Private Partnership Deal between Landowners companies, government and investors .... But sad to say that we don't have a policy, framework and system to allow for such foreign direct investment opportunities..... Department of Agriculture and Livestock should be taking lead to establish such an initiative in PNG

Farm income is down for the second year in a row, with receipts from corn and soybeans — the two largest field crops — off by a combined $23.5 billion from 2023 levels, but higher than expected livestock revenue is a counterweight, said the Agriculture Department on Tuesday. It estimated net farm income, a broad measure of profits, at $140.7 billion this year, down by $6 billion from last year but still the fourth-highest level on record. By Chuck Abbott (paywall)
