To me, this "build a new city on farmland in northern California" plan is a product of anti-systemic thinking. The reasons cities "don't work" is that they are part of a larger socio-economic political system that is dysfunctional... driven by Wall Street greed as much as anything else. This is a variation on Elon Musk's "Let's go to Mars" thinking... the desire to leave what doesn't work behind and go someplace where a fresh start is possible. But by being part of California (and of the USA and of the world), this plan will not be able to avoid the macro-systemic dysfunctional reality we currently suffer from. This is a misguided vision built on the desire to "create a better, new system to replace the old" as Buckminster Fuller said we should do. But Bucky's vision acknowledged we are part of a larger system. He sought to transform that system... not escape it. #CaliforniaForever PS No where in this report is there any mention of using sustainable, green building design methods. So (unless the subject never came up and they do have such plans), William McDonough should have been involved in this project. Of course, he'd probably have told them what I just mentioned above. #SustainableDevelopment Gil Friend Dale Biron John Elkington Marcia Daszko Dr. Mukhles Rahman, DTM Larry Starr Amy Edmondson John Pourdehnad Bob Leonard

As an author of Smart Growth legislation passed over a decade ago in NYS, I'm horrified by this project and the blatant disregard for existing infrastructure and conservation lands. Tell me, what is the difference between this proposal and the space travelers looking to colonize the moon? Could all of these resources go into fixing what is broken? What if instead they invested in home repairs for existing stock creating affordable and workforce housing? Brought transit up to speed with the RE industry and speculation to future proof service? https://lnkd.in/eKEtb_4d

California’s approach to development has failed our state. In a sit-down with urbanist vlogger, Alexander Rotmensz, our Head of Planning, Gabe Metcalf, talks about the need for infill AND greenfield development. We cannot solve our job creation, energy, and housing crises without building!

Sara C. Bronin's book "Key to the City" should be required reading for all planners - whether serving as professionals or as volunteer board members; or for that matter, anyone who cares about their community. Yes, it's about zoning, arguably the most arid of subjects. But Sara is a masterful storyteller and she makes it easy to grasp the everyday importance of this tough subject. Moreover, she puts zoning into historical and cultural settings; she assesses its shortcomings and celebrates its great potential. In particular, I was struck by this one subtle sentence: "To produce ethical outcomes, a zoning code must respond to its context." This is both analysis and prescription; one of Sara's central theses is that zoning should reward changing context with flexible response. I was left with renewed hope that zoning can simultaneously serve people's needs (all the people), promote the economy, and protect the environment. In short, zoning can help create wonderful communities that we will joyfully call home. Read this artfully written book - it's worth your time. https://lnkd.in/e4aCk_Fp

We brought out the big guns for this one. 💪 Last month Topology's Christopher Colley and William Kurzenberger were invited to speak at the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority workshop "Exploring Effective Models and Strategies for Land Reuse" at Thomas Edison State University. 👨🏫 They offered lessons learned in their work redeveloping challenging sites and discussed some case studies to help the audience understand how to apply those lessons to their own redevelopment challenges. 🏗 "Sharing capital ideas in the State capitol" as Will so aptly put it. #njredevelopment #njdevelopment #redevelopmentplanning #njplanners #njplanningfirm

An interesting article that highlights the hurdle that housing development faces when dealing with utility providers, this tension will be worth watching as developers are increasingly pushed toward 100% electrification directed by city and building code and how developments are at the mercy of utility providers. What’s interesting to me as a for profit developer was reading about affordable projects and how they face similar challenges and how there is a lack of accountability from utilities
