Latest: Saab has received a contract from the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) to conduct conceptual studies for future fighter systems between 2024 and 2025. The future air capability, as hinted in both Saab and MoD last year, could be conceptualised in the form of an upgraded Gripen multi-role fighter aircraft. Sweden was initially seeking a role in the UK-Japan-Italy Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), but Stockholm’s interest has slowly petered out, more and more factors pointing towards a growing Swedish desire to focus the country’s resources and attention on increasing its own defence capabilities. This, in part, was stemming from preparations for its NATO membership. But considering that the complexity of programmes like GCAP and the Franco-German Future Combat Air System (FCAS) is only exceeded by their value, it is unlikely that Sweden could go alone on a similar future combat air programme beyond a concept phase.

In combined and joint operations, Allies conducted airdrops from Romanian skies of thousands of paratroopers along NATO’s eastern flank during U.S.-led exercise Swift Response 24. Within the framework of NATO’s ongoing Steadfast Defender 24 series of exercise, forces from the France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain and United States participated in these air mobility demonstrations involving several thousand paratroopers jumping from U.S. C-17 as well as French and German A400M cargo aircraft. The manoeuvres demonstrated NATO members’ collective capabilities to swiftly respond to an attack on an Ally. Through rapid and massive force projection employing several Allies’ aircraft and Special Forces, the exercise simulated the protection of NATO territory on the eastern flank. The drills involved inserting these forces behind enemy lines to effectively prepare and support defensive operations. In total, 13,000 airborne troops participate in the month-long exercise that is conducted from the Baltics to the Balkans. Exercise Swift Response 24 is a U.S.-led exercise aimed at showcasing U.S. capabilities and cooperation with NATO Allies. Linked to NATO’s Steadfast Defender it is a clear demonstration of Alliance determination and capacity to implement and execute the deterrence and defence across the Euro-Atlantic area. The combined joint training activities validate that the Allies possess the capacity to execute Joint Forcible Entry operations and are able to decisively manoeuvre and gain advantage in a dynamic security environment. The U.S. routinely and regularly conduct exercises with European Allies. The main objectives of these exercise are to enhance interoperability among Allies improving joint operational capability across a variety of mission sets. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/g3Mp-Mw2

Valerii Zaluzhnyi seeks different sources and ways to generate military force. He thinks the 2nd and 3rd generation industrial ability is too fragile in Europe and seeks more agile, weaponizable, and scalable payloads and platforms to create impact in adversary's national system. How the defence industry is addressing these modern needs? Are European defence forces trying to build symmetric military capabilities to counter Russian strengths? "Our combat experience, particularly since 2022, is unique – but in the interests of victory, we must constantly find new ways and new capabilities to help us gain an advantage over the enemy. Perhaps the number one priority here is mastery of an entire arsenal of (relatively) cheap, modern and highly effective, unmanned vehicles and other technological means." https://lnkd.in/ezg8P8uN
