The Dark Auteur: Steering ‘Studio-ish’ Projects in the Film Industry’s Revival
The @European Film Market – EFM is experiencing a revival of activity, the most bustling it’s been in over half a decade. As audiences return to cinemas and distributors are on the hunt to replenish their offerings, a fresh wave of optimism is sweeping the industry.
This newfound optimism is distinct. It’s fueled by a genuine desire for pre-buying across all major territories.
One European seller noted: “There is a renewed sense of buyer enthusiasm bolstered by the string of box-office performing director-led independent films. It feels like we are back to basics, with a return to windowed releases to maximize the film’s full value potential from theatrical to ancillary, and distributors are feeling more empowered again in their territorial roles. Sundance Institute’s active deal-making across studios, streamers, and theatrical indies has sent positive wavelengths to kickstart the year, with solid packages announced here at EFM too.” https://lnkd.in/gwNdcf2P Deadline Hollywood
“Whether it’s a #streamer or a traditional #studio, I think there will be other sales that occur that show everyone needs movies again and is trying to find the right product.” - Scott Shooman, head of AMC Networks
Brian Beckmann at Arclight Films “buyers are selective and they are very much looking for not just product, but they’re looking for that quality theatrical material that they can get behind.”
Jean Labadie, Le Pacte, said he wishes there were more “interesting U.S. projects” available on the market.
In this evolving landscape, I’m spearheading two film projects that echo the industry’s emphasis on quality over quantity. These projects not only promise high production values but also substantial commercial potential and a promising return on investment. The current market has a high demand for such films, especially those that fall within the ‘studio-ish’ size range of $20 million to $100 million. As pointed out by industry insiders, these projects are what international distributors are seeking. With fewer studio films expected this year, larger indie projects like mine could fill the void.
Currently, I’m navigating the industry independently, without the guidance of a #manager or #agent. While the industry-standard rule of unsolicited material presents its challenges, it doesn’t deter my resolve. I’m optimistic about the journey ahead and confident in the potential of my projects to captivate the interest of top-tier #producer partners, #executives, #distributors, renowned actors, and #investors who are always on the lookout for extraordinary ventures.
For those intrigued by the magic of cinema, my profile offers a deeper dive into these projects. To resilience, innovation, and exciting future filmmaking possibilities. 🎬
