We are proud to be the first real estate company in mainland China and Hong Kong to join Climate Group’s #SteelZero initiative! This means we have committed to sourcing low-emissions steel in line with the SteelZero commitment for 50% of our steel by 2030, setting a clear pathway to using #netzerosteel for 100% of our steel by 2050, at the latest. In 2022, the carbon emissions from the steel generated in our development projects accounted for approximately 50% of the company's total embodied carbon emissions for that year. By decarbonizing steel, we’ll be taking a significant step towards achieving our SBTi-validated net zero targets for 2030 and 2050. Earth Day is just around the corner, and the The White House this week urged American steelmakers to continue leading the way when it comes to sustainable steel:   “Steel is the backbone of the American economy, and a bedrock of our national security. American steel fueled the country’s industrialization and helped build the middle class. American-made steel remains critical for our economic and national security. American companies must lead the future of more sustainable steel. This green steel will fortify the infrastructure that supports our communities, form the ocean vessels that transport American goods, power the electric vehicles of our clean-energy future, and support thousands of hardworking American families.”   We couldn't agree more. When it comes to sustainable steel, SMA members deliver the goods. They make steel using one of the cleanest routes: recycling obsolete iron and steel in low-emissions electric arc furnaces and turning it into brand-new steel for bridges, buildings, automobiles, appliances, energy infrastructure and much more. That keeps tens of millions of tons of ferrous scrap out of landfills — and it produces steel with 75 percent less carbon emissions than extractive processes.   For SMA members, every day is Earth Day.
