Email marketing has changed. The Feb 1 changes from Google and Yahoo have had a significant, industry wide impact on deliverability. Before that, the rise of privacy blockers and the slow death of cookies has been degrading the reach and effectiveness of email marketing for years. It used to be a given that your email was making it to the inbox, so the focus was on the creative aspect. That’s no longer the case. If your email isn’t reaching the inbox, it’s as if you never sent it. Give me a plain text email in the inbox over a beautifully designed email that ends up in spam. At least the former is getting in front of your users. In the new world of email marketing the technical aspects are the most important. Because if you’re not in the inbox, it doesn’t matter how well designed your email is.

I came across an Email Marketing Specialist job posting for an early SaaS company the other day, and it made me pause. Just a few months ago, I was that in-house marketer—juggling competing priorities, deadlines, and the constant push to do more with less. Now, stepping into consulting, I see early-stage SaaS challenges from a different angle. Most early SaaS companies don’t need a full-time hire right out of the gate. One of the reasons using email marketing can help your business grow. Email marketing has a larger reach. With Facebook boasting over 1 billion active users and Twitter boasting 255 million, it’s tempting to believe that social media is the most effective way to reach the masses. These are impressive numbers, but what isn’t so frequently shared are the statistics on email usage. The total number of worldwide email accounts was 3.9 billion in 2013, and reached 4.9 billion by 2017, according to Radicati. Imagine where those numbers are today. While this might seem surprising at first, think about your own online behavior: When you sign up for a website (like an online store), you have to enter your email address to create the account. You even need an email address to create a Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter account. What’s more, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter email to notify users of activity, like when someone is tagged in a photo or someone requests to connect. Email is the currency of the web, and anybody who’s online has an active email address. And while Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter might seem pretty ubiquitous, the ongoing struggle over data breaches and privacy means plenty of people are exiting some social media channels.
