The Illinois Tollway said its board of directors approved more than $38 million of construction and engineering contracts under the agency's $15 billion Move Illinois capital program. In December, the board voted to increase the duration of Move Illinois from 15 years to 16 years and added $1 billion to the budget. The capital construction program should be complete in 2027. In its latest round of contract awards, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has issued 10 new contracts totaling more than $118 million. This brings the total value of the GDOT’s Fiscal Year 2024 contracts, including those administered locally, to $1.08 billion. Of these latest awards, reconstruction projects were 53% of all contracts awarded, the GDOT said, followed by resurfacing (30%), bridge construction (14%) and safety (3%). Vertical Earth in Cumming, Georgia, won the largest single contract – more than $62.4 million – for approximately three miles of widening and reconstruction for turn lanes and other improvements along State Route (SR) 9 in Fulton County. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has opened up the public comment period for its proposed $7.9 billion, five-year construction program, the agency said Friday. This is part of the annual update to the ADOT's Five-Year Construction Program, which includes projects in design and construction. The plan must be approved by the state's Transportation Board. Efforts to build a new bridge connecting Interstate 83 in Harrisburg with the West Shore and Cumberland County got a big boost after it was announced that Pennsylvania had secured $500 million in federal funding for the project. The $500 million investment will help cover the cost of an estimated $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion plan to replace the existing structure, which is 64 years old and deteriorating. State transportation officials say cracks in the structure may prompt weight restrictions, and the increasing need for repairs has prompted partial and full closures at times. In November, the Northeast Corridor Commission — a coalition of Amtrak, commuter rail agencies, states and the U.S. Department of Transportation — laid out a 15-year, $176 billion plan to rebuild the corridor’s infrastructure and prepare for increased ridership and more trains. From the Oct. 1, 2023 beginning of the fiscal year through March 2024, Amtrak carried nearly 7 million passengers on the Northeast Corridor, a 25% jump year over year, according to the railroad’s most recent performance report. The corridor also hosts eight commuter railroads. The NEC Commission says a fully funded plan would almost double Amtrak service between New York City and Washington, D.C., and increase service between New York City and Boston by 50%.
