Using Chain Hoists for rigging trusses is soooo predictable. What else could we do? How about a trap lift 😁 Way back in 2021, we came up with this scheme for a modular, Smart Chain Hoist driven lift. When you don't need the lift for a show, the theatre has 4 programmable chain hoists available. More bang for the buck! We've made a handful since the concept first made it off the page, but this one that we just finished is the best iteration yet. And I'm pleased with how we managed to get it done without a lot of bandwidth available. It's large for a temporary stage lift — 8'x12'. The surrounding columns are seamed at 12' with extensions for either 16' of total travel or a whopping 19' of travel. To handle the larger platform and increased travel, we bumped up to 12" beams. To increase rigidity, the lateral supports are welded trusses instead of a bunch of bolted members. This also reduces number of parts and connections for faster installation. The lift is used show-by-show, not permanently installed, so it's gotta pop together quickly during load-in. A couple of other details that get a nod: 1. We reduced all of the installation hardware to 2 lengths of bolts: short bolt & long bolt. Piles of difficult-to-distinguish hardware are a PITA, whether assembling solo or (worse) directing a squad. "Which bolt?" is a question I'd like to eliminate during load-in. 2. Laser marked tags are fastened to every piece. Not only to identify the chunk of framing, but wherever a connection needs to be made, tags call out the truss/cross brace/column that should mate with that hole pattern. Because we can get super-clean markings with the laser, the anodized aluminum tags have simplified drawings to assist the assembler. Bonus: full-scale drawings of the bolt stack up is on the tag as well to make is super-clear what hardware is used. Technical details aside, I'm super-pleased that we pushed this machine out in about a month. Much of our staff was off in Hawaii installing a big project, so it took a little creative management to meet the deadline with a skeleton crew... I contacted Mark J. Marenghi to handle all the construction detailing / modeling work. Mark's one of the fastest technical designers I've ever seen. Collaboration across companies isn't always so easy, but this was a treat. We had brief, frequent back and forth (mostly using Basecamp from 37signals) hammering out the details of this new design based on previous versions. With much of our fab staff out of the shop, I split the project into two chunks. Mystic Scenic Studios, Inc. did fabulous work on all the waterjet cutting and welding the trusses. That gave us enough breathing room to handle the machining and beam processing in-house. All the parts, whether in-house or outsourced, snapped together with just a couple of us left behind in the Rhode Island shop to push this thing through to the finish... on straight time :)
