We are proud to announce that the first set of functionalized EMs for SC using IL-based electrolytes has been identified! Graphene-based electrode materials (EMs) have been processed by means of biofunctionalization enabling nitrogen doping of up to 3 wt%, expanding their potential applications. These functionalized EMs have been integral in the development of advanced electrode designs for supercapacitors (SCs), including innovative ionogel-type electrodes. Notably, these electrodes feature a patented design utilizing pure ionic liquids (ILs) as electrolytes, offering distinct advantages such as non-flammability and extended temperature ranges. The utilization of functionalized EMs in these electrode designs has led to remarkable performance improvements. These SC electrodes boast high energy density, exceeding 30 Wh kg-1, along with impressive high-rate capability, surpassing the capabilities of traditional solid-state electrodes. Such advancements highlight the potential of biofunctionalized EMs in revolutionizing energy storage technologies. Precision Micro expands its production facility. 📰 ⚙ Global chemical etching supplier Precision Micro has installed a new etching and stripping machine at its Fort Dunlop site in Birmingham, which puts the finishing touches to a second new etch room. Part of a £1.8 million investment, the business believes it is now uniquely placed to meet the increasing global demand for next-generation energy technologies such as hydrogen production and storage, carbon capture, green energy buffering, electric, and hydrogen electric vehicles. Karl Hollis, Precision Micro’s director of engineering, said: “With carbon neutrality and ‘net zero’ a crucial agenda item for many countries and businesses around the world, there is an ever-growing appetite for complex etched components used in the production, storage, recovery and transfer of ‘green’ energy. This includes parts such as printed circuit heat exchangers, busbar battery interconnects, bipolar plates for fuel cells and electrolysers used for hydrogen production. “The increased volumes needed to meet this demand, however, often require much larger and thicker sheets of metal to be used and after many conversations with customers in the green energy sector, it became clear there was a gap in the market for a supplier that had the capacity and equipment to manufacture these components.” #IndustryNews #UKManufacturing

Harmful gases like nitrogen oxides (NOx) are formed during fossil fuel combustion and are more potent than CO2. Industrial combustion specialists Global Combustion Systems in partnership with University of South Wales explored technologies which minimise NOx output with innovative ‘Auxiliary Injection’ technology. With funding from the Resilient Recovery Programme, provided by UKRI’s Transforming Industries Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK, EPSRC, and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, the project investigated whether its glass Auxiliary Injection system could be adapted and transferred to meet the growing needs of the steel industry. Using the Glass Futures combustion furnace, performance of the technology was assessed in scenarios that simulate a steel furnace. The project found that GCS’s technology is cheaper, doesn’t require additional space or chemicals, and can be retrofitted to existing furnaces. Following development of Auxiliary Injection technology, the project team hopes to explore the impacts of hydrogen combustion systems in the future. Whether you’re manufacturing cement, steel, chemicals, or paper, you need a large amount of heat. Almost without exception, manufacturers around the world create that heat by burning fossil fuels. In an effort to clean up the industrial sector, some startups are changing manufacturing processes for specific materials. Some are even changing the materials themselves. Daniel Stack SM ’17, PhD ’21 is trying to address industrial emissions across the board by replacing the heat source.Since coming to MIT in 2014, Stack has worked to develop thermal batteries that use electricity to heat up a conductive version of ceramic firebricks, which have been used as heat stores and insulators for centu ...
