🎉 🥂🍾 🌎 Surviving today's uneven, chaotic retail environment takes perseverance, creativity, flexibility and oh yes - patience which is why we are sending our congrats to our client, Locally, who is celebrating a decade transforming the consumer online-to-offline shopping experience with leading global brands and retailers. 👍 📈 Today, Locally serves over 55 million unique online shoppers each month, generates annual online-to-offline sales referrals of over $1.8 billion, and represents more than 47,000 retailers worldwide. ❗ 💡 Over the past 10 years, consumer shopping habits changed dramatically. Recognizing this early, under the watchful eyes of Locally founder and CEO Mike Massey, his talented team streamlined the search and purchase experience, prioritizing consumers through streamlined collaboration between brands and retailers. 🤝 Leading brands including Arc'teryx Equipment, Black Diamond Equipment, Merrell : Outdoor Footwear and Clothing, Osprey Packs, Inc., Patagonia, Sea to Summit Global and Smartwool, and others were in the trenches helping develop Locally's flagship product, Product Locator, a tool empowering shoppers to search for specific items and find nearby retailers that have them in stock. 📢 Mike shared, "Today, more than ever, the consumer is the channel. At a time when few brands had not even embarked on their e-commerce journey, we enabled brands to offer a comprehensive online shopping experience through their dealer networks. It was an honor to collaborate with these seasoned outdoor professionals, who not only shared my vision, but also, worked alongside Locally to bring these ideas to fruition." 👊 👊 It takes a village. Here are some interesting stories from the world of retail for Tuesday, December 3: 🥭 Mango’s goal of opening 40 owned stores in the US by the end of this year has been achieved ahead of schedule. The company plans to exceed it by opening two additional stores by the close of 2024. 🛍️ Adobe expects consumers to spend a record $13.2 billion on Monday, 6.1% more than last year. That would make it the season’s — and the year’s — biggest — shopping day for e-commerce. 🏈 Dick’s is expanding its holiday marketing efforts with a Texas-centric push featuring top athletes. Each athlete is charged with decorating their local store in a unique style for the title of Dick’s holiday decorating officer. 🏬 Mall of America drew some shoppers 200,000 on Black Friday. The mall doesn't have sales totals yet, but a survey of tenants found more than half of them experienced better sales than they did last year. 👖 Gap Inc. stock rose Monday as the retailer won an upgrade from JPMorgan Chase, which praised efforts by Chief Executive Richard Dickson to inject life into the store’s brands and gain market share. 📱 Some 55% of consumers said they have already discovered holiday gift ideas via TikTok. Shoppers are seeking out videos of unboxing products, customer reviews and user experience to make purchasing decisions. 👟 The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ordered Goat, an online marketplace for sneakers and apparel, to pay over $2m to consumers due to illegal shipping practices. 💵 Dollar General last week announced the appointments of Tom Hutchins and Kevin Pinchon to the positions of senior vice president of technology and senior vice president of distribution, respectively. 🔗 Linktree, a link-in-bio tool used by over 50 million people, is trying to redefine itself as a shopping platform. Links are increasingly used by influencers to sell stuff — particularly fashion, beauty and lifestyle goods. 🧑🏻⚖️ The Biden-era FTC has been aggressive against large deals of consumer companies. That could soon come to an end as M&A and antitrust experts expect dealmaking to pick up under the new administration. 🎌 Japanese second-hand goods retailers such as Geo Holdings and Bookoff Group look likely to step up overseas expansion plans with the sector projected to quadruple globally over the next decade. 🎬 The new Netflix documentary Buy Now! offers a critique the retail industry's unsustainable practices, particularly highlighting the impact of overproduction and waste. 🍸 Stoli USA, the owner of the namesake vodka, has filed for bankruptcy as it struggled to contend with slowing demand for spirits, a major cyberattack that has snarled its operations, and several years of fighting Russia in court. 🍗 Cargill, America's largest privately-held company, and the world's largest agricultural commodities trader, is to layoff around 5% of its global 164,000-strong workforce. #retail #retailnews #economy #DailyRetailNews

A super interesting read from Internet Retailing today: the secondhand and refurbished market is growing by 17% annually, and 40% of US shoppers have bought secondhand. "It's from Vinted..." is a phrase people hear from me pretty regularly, and even though within Vinted, I still search and buy from a set of my favourite brands, I always feel bad not going direct to the retailer. Luckily, more and more retailers are finding ways to enter the secondhand/preloved market for themselves, and there are a few LoyaltyLion users doing really innovative things here: - Lucy & Yak with their Re:Yak program which allows customers to return items to be recycled in exchange for perks. Loyalty program members can earn 100 points every time they use the Re:Yak program too. - Another fave, Never Fully Dressed, has been running its Preloved initiative for 8 years now. It allows customers to list their NFD items so they can be worn and loved by another fan. - Super excited to see what's coming up from Represent - stay tuned for a new initiative which will provide loyalty program members with a place to earn points as they buy and sell pre-owned items. This will be a very interesting space to watch in 2025! Got other examples I can check out? Let me know! #circularfashion #preloved #sustainabilityinfashion #ecommerce #loyalty

Sample sales can be a great way for brands to offload unsold inventory, often with more glamor and viral TikTok potential than a messy outlet rack inside a store, or just dumping inventory at a retailer. LA retailer Lisa Says Gah permanently removed its sale section from its retail and online stores, electing to host two samples sales a year in its LA and SF locations, founder Lisa Buhler hopes that her customers will shop the brand full price in between samples sales. Getting customers to pay full price for clothing is becoming more of a challenge as more and more shoppers, particularly price-sensitive millennials, gravitate towards secondhand clothing options. “I never buy anything full price,” said Emily Glaser, 23, an assistant buyer at Macy’s based in New York. “I just think it’s kind of dumb. You can easily search that an item is full-price here or on sale there. And sample sales tend to always have the best prices.” Feeling the pressure, with practically an endless array of secondhand clothing shown to customers daily on social media, brands from CULT GAIA, Reformation, and KHAITE are all now staging sales to clear their stockrooms. Some, like KHAITE, still prefer to do it quietly, keeping their client list exclusive by word of mouth and personal recommendations, no TikTokable moments involved. “It’s quite tedious but it makes the sales feel a bit more special. Otherwise, you’re just shopping at a glorified TJ Maxx.” How is your business managing excess inventory this year?

Off-price retailers like T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Burlington, and Ross are outperforming the broader apparel sector since consumers increasingly favor budget-friendly options. In Q3, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls saw YoY foot traffic increases of 5.1% and 5.5%, while Burlington led the segment with 6.4% growth. Despite slight YoY declines in some months, Ross outpaces competitors in customer loyalty; more than 50% of its visitors in Q3 returned at least twice in the same month, compared to 41.9%-47.6% for its competitors. All four off-price retailers have expanded their store networks significantly since 2019, fueling visitation growth while maintaining demographic consistency. Despite this growth, the trade area demographics across these retailers remained steady, reflecting a strong connection to their core audiences. As consumers continue prioritizing budget-friendly shopping, the off-price sector remains well-positioned for resilience during the holiday season, demonstrating its enduring appeal in the retail landscape. Andrew Klontz agrees, that "off price retailers offer customers value, convenience and exciting variety, with many loyal customers’ experience akin to treasure hunting. Further, these retailers are typically located in close proximity to a myriad of other national tenants in highly trafficked shopping centers, drawing customers to their stores both as primary destinations or crossover." The company finally has a solution – consistent and generous portions. 📱 Fintech company Affirm has announced a mobile app redesign meant to incentivize more spending at its partner retailers this holiday season. #retail #retailnews #economy #DailyRetailNews
