They planned the party without ‘HR’, and I loved every moment of it. Three weeks before Christmas, I received an unexpected call from one of our admin staff. They had planned an end-of-year get-together for all staff and was inviting me to speak on ‘Cultural Intelligence: An Essential Skill for Career Advancement.’ For a moment, I was stunned. Staff had planned a party all by themselves, games, décor, music. Was I to be excited or concerned? Isn’t this supposed to be the other way around? On Christmas eve, I walked into the hospital, ready for my session but completely in awe of what I saw. They had gone all out, designing and decorating an area for the party, organizing games, and creating such a joyful atmosphere. It reminded me of the Annual Staff Awards and Party we held a few months ago. During that event, the management and HR team had taken time to celebrate and appreciate the incredible work our staff do daily. So seeing them now take the initiative to plan something for themselves felt like a beautiful continuation of that spirit of recognition and togetherness. As I sat down to soak in all I saw, my heart screamed, ‘YES, this is HR done well! (It was truly encouraging)💃💃 Because, 1. It reflected ownership: The staff felt empowered and cared for enough to take the initiative. 2. It showcased community: Beyond work, they created a space to celebrate one another, a clear sign of a strong culture. 3. It affirmed our HR vision: The well-being of employees is not just something we talk about; it’s a lived experience they feel and embody. Next year, I will make sure they are pampered in return because they truly deserve it😁. But this moment? It showed me that the seeds we are planting for an inclusive and supportive workplace are truly growing. To the amazing staff of Charis-Med Hospital, thank you for the joy you bring to work and the care you show one another🤗 How are you creating spaces where employees feel valued and empowered to take the lead? Let’s learn from each other, share your thoughts in the comments please. PS: I’m still ‘blushing’ thinking about it 😊 #HRinhealthcare #employeeengagement #Workplaceculture #Careeradvancement

🐓I don’t miss the roosters. 🐓 In today’s All Hands meeting we celebrated 20 colleagues who have been part of the VisionSpring journey for 5, 7 and 10+ years. Their tenacity, integrity and smarts have molded us into the dynamic, purpose-first team we are today—now more than 425 strong! Coming into this All Hands meeting, I was reflecting on what our All Hands felt like 9 years ago when we first started them. 🐓 We didn’t afford ourselves a video platform with mic control so the remarks were constantly interrupted by roosters and horns beeping. 🔆 We could cover most of our organizational activity in the agenda. Now we curate select highlights - wins and worries. 🎉 We were celebrating welcomes and just a handful of 3-year work anniversaries. Now we’ve got so many committed colleagues, we start at 5 years and need a reel! A lot has changed. But the spirit of connectedness across time, space, language and cultures is stronger than ever…as evidenced in our chat! As we head into Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for the unique contributions and perspectives of my colleagues. You have propelled us to screen the vision of more than 2.8 million people and correct the vision of more than 2 million people this year alone. Here’s to your brilliance and the many more milestones we’ll achieve together. #Teamwork #Milestones #Gratitude #SocialEntrepreneurship

Beth Millar is next in our series of catching up with our People Team following their double win at The Caterer People Awards last week. Beth joined us two years ago and has been a key member of the People Team as well as bringing on board Elsa Waterfield who joined the Marketing Team nearly one year ago. Here is what Beth has to say... As we grow, how important is it to preserve the culture that makes Heartwood such a special place for our people? Preserving our culture is essential because it’s truly what makes Heartwood Collection a meaningful, inspiring place to work. Unlike many companies where values can feel like empty words, we always seek excellence, lead by example, and genuinely care - our values are played out every single day. Seeking excellence shows up in moments like our busiest service periods, when every team member pulls together to deliver the highest standards, no matter the pressure. When it comes to leading by example, I’ve seen managers working alongside their teams during challenging shifts, showing resilience and reinforcing the respect and care we have for one another. And genuinely caring is clear in the way we support one another through personal challenges, offering help, flexibility, and understanding in a way that makes Heartwood Collection feel like a second family. These are the everyday actions that make our culture truly special, and they’re what makes Heartwood Collection feel like so much more than just a workplace. #people #team #award #reward #hospitality #hospitalityindustry #culture #recruitment #culture

Why Secret Santa Should Be a Part of Corporate Culture As the holiday season approaches, Secret Santa isn’t just about exchanging gifts — it’s a powerful way to strengthen team bonds, boost morale, and foster a positive work environment. Why we should embrace this tradition in corporate culture: 1. Building Team Camaraderie: Secret Santa encourages employees to connect beyond work tasks, fostering a sense of camaraderie and community across departments. 2. Promoting Fun & Creativity: It’s a chance to get creative and show appreciation in a lighthearted, fun way — which can break up the routine and spark joy in the workplace. 3. Fostering Inclusivity: Secret Santa is an inclusive, low-pressure activity that allows everyone to participate, regardless of their role or tenure in the company. 4. Enhancing Employee Well-being: A simple act of gift-giving can brighten someone’s day and create a culture of kindness and positivity, improving overall morale. Let’s embrace the spirit of giving and celebrate the season together — a little bit of festive fun can go a long way in building stronger, more connected teams. #SecretSanta #CorporateCulture #TeamBuilding #HolidaySpirit #EmployeeWellbeing #WorkplaceFun

🌟 Why Team Building Matters 🌟 In today’s fast-paced work environment, successful companies understand that growth is built on strong teams. That's why investing in team-building activities is more important than ever! Here are a few reasons why team-building initiatives can make a difference: 🔹 Enhanced Collaboration Team-building exercises break down silos, encouraging people from different departments to connect and work together. This helps bridge gaps, creates open communication channels, and fosters a collaborative culture. 🔹 Boosted Morale and Engagement Happy teams are productive teams! Engaging in fun, non-work-related activities can refresh and re-energize employees, making them feel valued and motivated. This often leads to improved job satisfaction and higher retention rates. 🔹 Increased Trust and Empathy Through challenges and activities, colleagues can understand each other's strengths, weaknesses, and working styles. Building trust within teams is key to creating a positive work environment where people feel comfortable expressing ideas and giving feedback. 🔹 Better Problem-Solving Skills Team-building often includes activities that require creative problem-solving, pushing employees to think outside the box. This can lead to enhanced critical thinking skills that benefit projects and client solutions down the line. When a company invests in its people, it shows! Team-building isn’t just a “nice-to-have”—it's a strategic advantage. 🌐 How has your organization benefitted from team-building? 💡 EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT 💡 Meet Matthew Monk, a financial associate at Halliday Financial. He joined the team 8 months ago. Let’s learn more about him: 1. What do you enjoy most about working at Halliday Financial? The people. Everyone here is friendly. It’s a family-oriented business, which really shows in the culture. 2. Can you share a memorable moment you had during your time here? Both of our Christmas parties, both in the office and out of the office. They were really fun. 3. How do you stay motivated/productive at work? I focus on the larger goal of helping people. I’m motivated by helping people achieve their goals and reach financial freedom. 4. What do you like to do with your free time outside of work? I like to play golf and workout. I also enjoy taking the dogs on walks with my girlfriend. They are great Pyrenees and very cute (and large). 5. What’s one thing people may not know about you? People might not know that I’m from Vancouver. Also, I’m a really good cook. (Not to toot my own horn). 6. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? I would travel to Iceland and Greece. Iceland is a unique spot to visit. Greece is visually beautiful, along with having great food. Visiting Greece would give me a different idea of Europe, separate from the typical visiting spots such as Italy, France, the UK, etc. 7. What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received? If something is hard, it’s hard for a reason. Usually, working for difficult things is worthwhile and pays off. 8. If you could have dinner with any famous person, living or dead, who would it be and why? Tiger Woods. Growing up, I idolized him. He’s one of the best, if not the best, golf players. He also had an insane life that I would love to talk to him about. I would probably ask him what it was like being so successful so early on. 9. Finally, who’s someone that inspires you in your life? My two brothers. They’re both older than me, so I look up to them. They each took separate paths in life, but they have both gotten to be extremely successful. I want to take a bit of inspiration from both of their lives.
