New Episode: https://lnkd.in/gfjXFrNh As we count down to the release of the limited series After America, we are revisiting some past episodes of Deep Dive to help lay the groundwork for this important project that will attempt to answer the question - What would it actually look like if American democracy were to fail? Dark Tales: Music by Rahul Bhardwaj from Pixabay ------------- Can America’s democracy survive the rising tide of extremism, judicial assertiveness, and political violence? Dr. David Faris kicks off the conversation by dissecting the radical shifts within the Republican Party and their profound implications for political polarization and legislative deadlock. His analysis raises urgent questions about the future of bipartisan cooperation and the erosion of democratic norms in the United States. Next, Dr. Sarah Benesh delves into the Supreme Court's increasingly influential role in shaping policy on contentious issues from voting rights to reproductive health. Through detailed exploration of landmark cases, she reveals how the court's originalist philosophy exacerbates ideological divides and impacts public perception, offering a crucial perspective on the judiciary's evolving power. Dr. Benesh's examination provides essential context for understanding the court's decisions and their far-reaching consequences. Lastly, Dr. James Hawdon brings to light the unsettling rise of political violence and its destabilizing effects on democracy. By drawing connections between misinformation, incendiary rhetoric, and events like the January 6th Capitol attack, he underscores the urgent need to counteract these threats. As we head towards the 2024 election, Dr. Hawdon's insights stress the importance of proactive strategies to protect democratic institutions. Tune in for a compelling discussion that offers a sobering yet hopeful look at the forces shaping America's future. #democracy #authoritarianism #maga #trump #dictator #republicans #gop #election2024 #biden #politicalviolence #extremism #scotus #supremecourt #alito #clarencethomas #ethics #legitimacy #trust #afteramerica #deepdivewithshawn

Another Trump presidency would be an apocalypse on so many fronts I am not sure where to start. For starters, some 20 million immigrants who have called the U.S. home for decades would live in terror before being rousted from their homes and sent to concentration camps, and deported. Refugees lawfully seeking asylum would be shot at the border. Women (and men's) reproductive and privacy rights will be further rescinded. LGTQB+ folx will be targetted for discrimination and the rights they have won will be further eroded. Political opponents will be targeted by military and security forces. The modest inroads that have been made in arresting climate change would be eliminated and with it any momentum for creating sustainable ecosystems for the planet. The SCOTUS will be packed and re-packed with Christian Nationalist zealots, and the rule of law and longstanding legal precedents establishing personal and political rights excised. Workplace rights and union rights will be dictated by the likes of Elon Musk and David Sacks, who want to dismantle the National Labor Relations Board and get rid of employee focussed equity in the workforce and economy. Support and elect Haris/ Walz and encourage swing state friends and family to do so.

It is crucial that in a functioning democracy there be an open, wide-ranging, and energetic difference of opinion among those citizens entrusted with the gift of liberty. Freedom of speech and the ballot box are the legacies that have been dearly bought by generations of Americans in uniform. To see these freedoms perverted and attacked by would-be assassins embracing an ideology repugnant to most Americans is a reminder that their actions can only be described as a capital crime against our democracy.

So, I was wrong. Quite wrong. I thought if you ran the most racist, xenophobic, misogynistic campaign in modern U.S. history, you’d lose. Watching the level of decisions made due to wanting to be close to status quo power and internalized racism is significant. Also seeing how much America hates women was super depressing to see. On the flip side, I also understood why a significant amount of people didn’t come out for Harris because of Biden/Harris lack of action and gaslighting on Gaza. Others chose not to come out because the Dems never addressed corporate greedflation & price gouging that made us all feel broke. So, I fear now that voting in such a toxic, narcissistic man for a second time will give permission for other misogynists to do the same. We are already seeing it happening. So what we are going to do about it? I appreciate the advice of adrienne maree brown and James Baldwin. Adrienne speaks of cultivating love and joy as a form of resistance, and focusing on rest when needed because this is going to be such a long, challenging slog. Baldwin speaks about being careful not to become what you hate most. The level of cynicism and nihilism that will be pushed upon us will be significant. And if we start believing that nothing we do matters is when they win. So maybe its right that during absurd times, we need an absurd amount of love, compassion, empathy, and shared humanity for each other and especially for ourselves. #election #election2024 #president #presidentialelection #kamala #kamalaharris #trump #cynicism #hope #love #compassion #vote #voting

The Illusion of Choice: RNC and DNC's Stranglehold on Politics The RNC and DNC's stranglehold on the political process has led to a crisis of representation and accountability. By excluding third parties and independent voices, they're perpetuating a binary system that serves their own interests, not the people's. This manipulation of the narrative and suppression of diverse perspectives is a threat to democracy itself. The younger generations are indeed waking up to this reality and demanding change. It's time to shatter the duopoly and create a more inclusive, participatory political system that truly represents the will of the people. #BreakTheDuopoly #OpenTheDebates #DemocracyReform #CNN #FoxNews #BillMaher #AndrewCuomo #AdamKinzinger #lincolnrepublicans
