With apparel brands having committed extensively to global sourcing and manufacturing years ago, it is noteworthy that many of the current challenges we face – micro-plastics, climate change, synthetic dyes, overproduction, and lack of transparency – were mostly not prioritized on their radar screen at the time. Consequently, they now find themselves ill-equipped to promptly address these issues. Although navigating a significant shift in strategy is very challenging, failing to recognize and act upon these pressing concerns is unacceptable. In a time where awareness of these detrimental effects is rapidly evolving, and governmental action often lags behind, the impetus for change predominantly rests with the consumer. It is imperative for apparel brands to acknowledge their responsibility and actively pursue sustainable practices. Putting organic cotton and recycled polyester on the label does not justify not cutting it to addressing the bigger picture of the broken apparel industry. #resilency #reshoring #transparency David Billstrom Charlie Merrow Bill Amos Carolina Textile District Ilsa Spaan TS Designs Solid State Clothing Hudson's Hill Justin James Textile Exchange
Since NAFTA was enacted in 1994, along with numerous other global trade agreements, apparel brands have leveraged the global market to bolster their bottom lines, often disregarding or giving little attention to their impact on people and the planet. Today, 98% of the apparel industry operates overseas, with 30% of apparel never reaching retail! Additionally, those same companies contribute significantly to the microplastics that are contaminating our oceans, our sea life, and now our bodies. Fortunately, TS Designs does not follow this trajectory and firmly believes in pursuing a path that addresses these critical issues. While complex and lacking a silver bullet solution, we believe that here in the Carolinas, at the intersection of agriculture and apparel, provides an optimal setting to realize this vision. SUPPLY CHAIN INTEGRITY The complexities of the apparel supply chain underscore the importance of maintaining efficient and responsible sourcing practices. A streamlined sourcing strategy holds the potential to reduce carbon emissions, minimize waste, enhance operational efficiency, and expedite product delivery. At Galvin Green, we harness historical data and use advanced forecasting techniques to ensure the precision of our garment production orders. This approach results in minimal surplus fabrics and components at the end of a production run. By refraining from over-ordering, we actively reduce waste and enhance operational efficiency. Our testing ensures select products meet the requirements within and outside the EU, and we use standardized, transparent methods to demonstrate this. Garments with components that have bluesign® and OEKO-TEX certifications are marked as such in their product description on our webstore. We proudly offer a range made from recycled materials, and most leftover fabrics are utilised in our Upcycled Collection. Our logistics teams use intelligent, tape-free, and recyclable packaging solutions. Sourcing represents an opportunity for Galvin Green to substantially mitigate our environmental footprint and we are determined to exceed expectations.
