Even stories that seem to defy story structure actually have that scaffolding hidden underneath everything if you know how to look for it!

I remember the way Pulp Fiction hit me harder than any of it's contemporaries or forerunners had, and I attribute the majority of the impact to the weight of it's non sequential structure and the cognitive dissonance that the dramatic way tension resolution was achieved by reversing of the timeline ...

Yes! STRICT structure - more of it! Too little structure and dull premise is the death of good storytelling.

With hindsight we can always see the scaffolding in great art. I always plot carefully, but I am mindful to allow myself to deviate where I am compelled to be taken from the main road. Every great song needs a chorus until the Stranglers release Golden Brown.
