In Michael Lucchese's review of David T. Beito's book, "The New Deal’s War on the Bill of Rights: The Untold Story of FDR’s Concentration Camps, Censorship, and Mass Surveillance," Lucchese commends Beito for doing "a real service confronting the [Japanese internment's] sordid realities," as well as the other breaches of Constitutional rights brought about by FDR. "The New Deal has been revolutionizing American society for more than ninety years. It is unlikely the programs Roosevelt imposed on the country will ever be completely rolled back. But for conservatives interested in restoring our constitutional order, David Beito’s latest book is an important reminder that we must not simply come to terms with Roosevelt’s revolution." We live in a time when the demand for justice is especially urgent. Violations of the law, particularly during war, resonate more deeply, while trust in international law to protect human rights continues to erode. On Human Rights Day, let’s reflect on the importance of taking responsibility for our rights and respecting the rights of others. A step forward could be the Declaration of Human Responsibilities by Ukrainian economist and visionary Bohdan Hawrylyshyn. We call on you to support the idea of establishing Human Responsibility Day at the EU level. It is a vital step toward restoring meaning to our moral and informational space. Only through action can we show that democratic values are more than words.
