Critical issues are numerous and #Europe is lagging behind.... in terms of economy, as well as for #research and #innovation! But as mentioned in the Draghi and in the Heitor's report "Align, Act, Accelerate", RD&I is also an essential factor for EU competitiveness. In the next #MFF, the #Competitiveness fund should be used as a catalyst of RD&I investments! And we as #RTOs are strongly supporting industrial scale-up in Europe!!

UMN VP for Research & Innovation Shashank Priya (L) had a chance to meet with Adele Ratcliff (Center), Director of Innovation Capability and Modernization at US DoD, who was in town this week to visit companies in the Twin Cities, including UMN startup Niron Magnetics, Inc., at the invitation of US Representative Betty McCollum (R). Director Ratcliffe's office aims to improve the readiness and competitiveness of the U.S. industrial base by establishing high priority domestic capabilities for new supply chains needed for national security and mitigating exposure to global supply chain risks.

The United States and European Union have adopted different industrial policy strategies to strengthen their #semiconductor industries, but the approaches of the two differ. Both industrial policy initiatives focus predominantly on boosting the capacity for intermediate products. However, the US has a centralized model, robust funding and stringent conditionalities, while the EU has a decentralized approach, the European Commission as orchestrator and targeted funding by member states. This #IAIPaper by Fabio Bulfone, Donato Di Carlo, Filippo Bontadini & Valentina Meliciani highlights the EU’s need for increased supranational funding for #digitalindustrialpolicy to strengthen its position between global leaders and emerging powers.
