On February 1, 2024, the government of Catalonia officially declared a drought emergency after more than 1,000 days without adequate rainfall, and as water reserves plummeted to less than 16%. This declaration triggered emergency protocols affecting over 6 million residents, including daily water restrictions, the suspension of irrigating public parks, emptying of city fountains and pools, and the closure of beachside showers. In the face of these new and sobering realities, the region reacted. Media attention intensified, the Spanish government announced increased funding for water management initiatives, and local authorities called for innovative proposals to address the crisis. Restrictions persisted, and even bold measures such as importing water by ship were considered. Uncertainty loomed—no one knew when the rains would return, how much relief they would bring, or how long this precarious state would last. Fast forward to May 13 2024, the Catalonian Government announced an end to the drought emergency as reservoirs returned to levels of 25%+, and the immediate threat of a ‘day zero’ had been averted. The city of Barcelona could breathe a temporary sigh of relief. This period of emergency state highlighted the profound urgency of reorienting our relationship with water. But the question remains—how do we move forward? In what ways must we adapt, in what ways must we rebuild for resiliency, rather than reverting to a vulnerable status quo? And towards what kind of futures to ensure water security in a world where scarcity may become the norm? After a year of engaging with these questions, our students in the Master’s Program in Strategic Design in Complexity at Elisava School of Design and Engineering developed a thought-provoking exhibition for this years Barcelona Design Week. The exhibition "Amor Sec" encouraged reflection as a first step—sparking conversations (and letters to water) about our individual and collective experiences and our desires for shaping a water-secure future.

Please enjoy this teaser of the first session from The Design Conference 2024 featuring Rogan Jansen from DashDigital® Studio (RSA). Talk 01/21 — Embracing Uncertainty: Demystifying the Notion of Having it All Figured Out • What happens when you launch your own studio, and one year later the worst happens? A global pandemic, a dry pipeline and no new business for seven months — this is exactly what happened when TDC speaker Rogan Jansen launched DashDigital® Studio. But he’s here to let you know it all turned out okay. When you run your own studio, ambiguity reigns, and success emerges amongst chaos. Rogan will take us behind the scenes to look at the processes and planning he’s implemented to successfully scale DashDigital®, as well as the hard decisions he’s made along the way. His goal? To demystify the idea that even the best founders and directors in our industry have it all figured out. In this Talk, we’ll look behind the veneer of perfection that so many of our peers project to see the raw and gritty reality of running your studio and how we can strap in for the ride and embrace the uncertainty that comes with it. No pretence. No shame. Watch the full talk online at: https://lnkd.in/gYB2yZjg

I am soooo delighted to read Emma Blomkamp's pragmatic approach to codesign outlined in this article!!!! If it is not possible in all circumstances to use an ideal, full blown codesign methodology, is it not useful to utilise the principles and practices of codesign judiciously in social justice initiatives? for example, benefitting from codesign model of care resources? Acknowledging and working towards addressing power imbalance in building effective solutions? Listening and acting upon lived experience expertise? Adapt, Adapt, Adapt to each unique circumstance, with ambition to increase codesign buy-in, resourcing and capabilities over time for well-matched initiatives.
Highly recommend reading Emma Blomkamp's article on shades of co-design. Love the 'well of participation', building on Arnstein’s (1969) ladder of participation and the IAP2 (2018) spectrum of public participation https://lnkd.in/eqT2VivS

Latest news from Odoma
🎨 Exciting News! 🎨 For several years, Odoma has been collaborating with the Félix Vallotton Foundation and the Swiss Institute for Art Research on a groundbreaking project. We were entrusted with designing and developing an open-access platform to create a catalogue raisonné of the illustrations and press cartoons works of the renowned Swiss artist Félix Vallotton. The challenge was integrating the concept of "multiplicity" into the interface, considering that certain illustrations are printed several times in different contexts, media, and formats. Through iterative collaboration with the research team, we've successfully translated evolving needs into practical features. Now, several hundred images are interconnected through a system capable of exploring the different facets of Vallotton’s illustrative works. Excitingly, we've just been commissioned to develop the consultation platform that will present the catalogue and provide public access to this new corpus: a new journey begins! Primarily designed for the scientific community,, the platform will also offer free exploration for those who simply want to appreciate the uniqueness of Vallotton's work. Stay tuned for updates on this innovative project! #FelixVallotton #ArtResearch #OpenAccessPlatform #Odomastudio #designforhumanities
