In 2025, I'm planning to recruit at least one intern to help develop versatile and highly reusable open-source tools for the biodiversity informatics community. This would be a 12-week internship, and I'll be providing guidance throughout the project. As this is new territory for me, I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice! Specifically: - Does this approach sound beneficial to the field? Is it feasible for an intern to work mostly remotely, provided I find the right candidate? Or would pairing two interns be more effective for team support? - Where would be the best platforms to post this opportunity? - Any recommendations for universities or academic programs with strong candidates in this field? - Knowing internships are typically unpaid in Belgium, how can I fairly recognize and reward the intern’s contributions? Providing and Pursuing Effective Internships: Workshop Slides Available Greetings! I’m now back from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting. I enjoyed attending presentations and receptions, visiting the exhibit hall, having a dinner with current and former students, and more. This year, the AAAS meeting’s theme was “Toward Science Without Walls.” Accordingly, I gave a workshop titled “Beyond Academic Walls: Providing and Pursuing Successful Internships.” Topics of the workshop included benefits of internships; finding internships and interns; suggestions for before, during, and after an internship; and tips on remote internships. The workshop was near the end of the last day of the meeting, and many people had already left for the airport. It also was in the same time slot as some especially interesting-sounding sessions. Thus, not surprisingly, the workshop attendance was small. However, the people who did attend the workshop seemed quite engaged. I learned from them as well as their learning from me. One idea I gained was for the internship site to prepare a manual for interns. With luck, the workshop will have broader impact, as the AAAS meeting registrants can obtain my slides through the meeting website.
