If we're supposed to be delivering daily, where does the idea of a national holiday fit into that?
Let's start by understanding the national holiday.
Labor Day is our annual holiday recognizing the contribution workers have made to the economic success of this country.
What started as local movements in the early 1880s turned into a congressional bill in 1894, making the first Monday of September a national holiday.
Celebrations have traditionally mixed parades with other recreation for workers.
At its roots, labor day is a celebration of success in the industrial age.
Today, much of our work is knowledge work, or service work. The idea of resting physically has been replaced by unplugging.
Stepping away from the details of work is important to recovery, to creativity, and to sustaining our focus for a long time.
"If the satisfaction of an old man drinking a glass of wine counts for nothing, then production and wealth are only hollow myths."
-Simon de Beauvoir
Enjoy, take some leisure, and reflect on why you're doing what you do. What is the outcome you are after.
Then come back strong, more creative, and ready for another day tomorrow.
Enjoy the holiday!
