Beyond the Scramble: Funding Community Solutions at the Idea Stage 🚀 Tired of feeling like you're in a constant battle for survival as a #nonprofit or #startup? 😥 The endless hunt for funding can drain your team, make you risk-averse, and ultimately hurt the very communities you serve. It doesn't have to be this way. 💡 #TheProblem: It's Not Just About the Money 💰 Too often, funding feels #transactional: we chase grants for specific projects, proving our worth over and over. Meanwhile, the magic ingredients for lasting change get overlooked – the #relationships, #trust, and deep understanding of community #needs, things local nonprofits have in abundance. 🤝 The #DreamingPhase Solution ✨ Imagine if funders saw themselves as #catalysts, not just check-writers. What if they invested in the early stages - the dreaming, connecting, and co-creating with nonprofits and #communities? Here's the power shift: 🌱 From #IdeasToImpact: "Dreaming Phase" grants support initial exploration and relationship building, laying the groundwork for truly impactful solutions. 🤝 Funders as #Partners: Funders' active participation brings resources, networks, and a fresh perspective to the collaborative process. 🔎 #Tech for Good: Tools like Generative AI can streamline the search for innovative local organizations, saving funders valuable time. The #Value of #Community Roots 🌳 Say a funder wants to address youth #mentalhealth in a particular town. A "Dreaming Phase" grant could allow a trusted local #nonprofit to: 🗣️ Engage #Youth: Facilitate honest conversations with young people themselves to understand the real issues they face. 🤝 Build #Trust: Tap into existing relationships with parents, schools, and other community organizations for a holistic perspective. 🔍 #Local Expertise: Understand what might be culturally appropriate, identify barriers to existing resources, and spot innovative ideas. #CollectiveImpact Potential: 💪 This early investment could organically lead to a Collective Impact initiative, with the nonprofit perhaps even becoming the backbone organization thanks to the trust and connections built. #CallToAction 📣 📣Funders, are you ready to embrace this model? Could you set aside even a small portion of your #funding for "Dreaming Phase" grants? 📣 #Nonprofits, let's highlight the value we bring– not just what we do, but how we're uniquely positioned to drive #change 📣Intermediaries, how can you help? Can you connect funders and nonprofits, facilitate #collaboration, and advise on this process? Let's move beyond the scramble and embrace a new era of collaborative funding! Join the conversation – share your experiences, questions, and ideas for making the "Dreaming Phase" a reality. Tomorrow, we'll dive deeper into creating actionable roadmaps to turn this vision into a tangible impact in your community. 🚀

Startups are applauded for asking for money. Nonprofits? Judged for it. Here’s how it plays out: When a startup raises $1M, everyone cheers. “They’re scaling! They’re innovating!” When a nonprofit raises $1M, people ask: “How much is actually going to the cause?” And let’s talk overhead. A startup can spend 70% of its funding on salaries, tools, and marketing and it’s just smart business. But when a nonprofit spends 30% on the same? Suddenly, they’re “wasting donations.” Why do we celebrate ambition and strategy in startups but question it in nonprofits? Why do we punish organizations trying to solve the hardest problems for being…human? Impact requires people. People require salaries. And scaling solutions to climate change, poverty, or healthcare isn’t free. It’s time we stop making nonprofits apologize for being organizations that need funding to exist. With purpose and impact, Mario

Curious what people think about non-profit funding models. For those who have worked in the space, or who have worked closely with non-profits, you know how much time is spent on fundraising - pulling time and attention away from programming. And, so little of what's raised goes to the actual people executing the work, leading to burnout and losing passionate and dedicated people. When I speak to people in the for-profit world, those who don't know the non-profit space, they are blown away by the 90:10 split - that's 90% to programming and 10% to operational costs. How do you innovate, expand, or stay modern when so tightly constrained? We're trying out something new at Purpose For Profit, I'd love feedback on our model from friends and colleagues who have been dedicated to non-profits and philanthropy. I'd also love to learn what you've seen work, new models that you're excited about, and changes that you think are needed.

I read this with great interest. I love helping smaller non-profits evolve and grow, maybe one day to the $50M+ mark. Two things stuck me in this research from The Bridgespan Group: 1) Philanthropy, even in the health and social services sectors where fees and contracts have long dominated revenues, has grown considerably to be the fastest-growing source of funding. 2) By focusing on groups less than 30-years old, they show how even start-up non-profits can eventually grow to a huge size. And I think this quote is the key: "Philanthropy-focused funding models depend on multi-year philanthropic commitments, otherwise organizations may be financially vulnerable." I would love to know more about how non-profits secured those commitments. Was it by recruiting and retaining stars for your development team? Was it charismatic leadership? Was it because of a Big Hairy Audacious Goal? Did they have powerful partnerships? What have you found with your donors that has inspired multi-year funding? https://lnkd.in/e8u4RHPu

"When unmet needs arise in a community, there's a high chance that somewhere else in the country, an existing nonprofit is successfully tackling that very challenge." Establishing an organization requires a significant investment of time, energy, funding, and manpower. It's essential to scale effective nonprofits rather than starting new organizations. I’ve enjoyed thoroughly in being involved in or reading reports of baseline studies done by the international non-governmental organisations that I have worked for. Surveying the community and piloting programs before launching them officially had helped the team address social issues more effectively. The challenge lies more in showcasing to stakeholders how successful organizations are addressing issues, providing an accurate understanding of unique community needs, and offering sound recommendations. @Alliance Magazine GreenLight Fund #CommunitySurvey #nonprofit #SocialImpact #PolicyResearch #research

The not-for-profit sector in Aotearoa New Zealand is facing a funding crisis. This is impacting charities large and small, we are seeing some closing their doors, others scaling back services - both of these outcomes resulting in reduction of support for those who need it most. We need to stop fighting for the same shrinking funding pool. Can we reimagine how we approach funding and service delivery in the not-for-profit space? is there a collaborative, more holistic, collective approach? I've been thinking about this for the Digital Equity sector. Keen to hear what others think. https://lnkd.in/gfXXW5N2
