Resource contention is a major obstacle to meeting the #compute requirements of the life sciences #community, as none of the customers Adam Marko has ever talked to have said they have enough resources. In particular, this field has a severe #GPU #shortage. For example, Adam recently spoke to some cryogenic electron microscopy (#cryoEM) #researchers who had already maxed out their GPU #nodes. However, even if they have twice as many nodes, they would be able to fill them up within a few days. The ability to take the data to compute resources would therefore be highly advantageous, but there aren't very good ways of doing that. As a result, this problem will continue to worsen. Collaborators need effective ways to get their #data to each other as they become #geographically more diverse. Large organizations like #pharmaceutical firms and #universities can centralize compute resources with both public and private clouds. Hammerspace is the only platform that can do this effectively, as shown by its performance. This solution eliminates the need to use tools like plain scripts, rsync and file-sharing applications to move data back and forth, which often results in nobody knowing where their data is. Many sources are available for estimating the time researchers spend on just managing their data. This figure is never less than 20 percent, so the average is more than that. This overhead slows the pace of research, especially when attempting to implement different solutions with different infrastructure platforms.
