Did you know that last FY, 52% of our work was specifically directed towards helping people access, set up, and maintain safe, secure homes? Ending homelessness takes more than just housing (that's why we have 6 impact pillars!) but it's an important part of the picture. Our 'housing' pillar represents how we help to prevent and end homelessness through #housingfirst, legal aid, tenancy support, and housing set up. Right now, we're in the midst of our End of Year Appeal which is solely focused on helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people, those with pets, and young people move towards safe homes. At a time of year when so many of us look forward to relaxing and celebrating at Home, we're supporting those facing homelessness on their journey towards one. #homelessness #endingjomelessness #community #appeal #fundinraising #impactreport

It continues to amaze me how under-reported the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act has been. I suspect if I asked five random people on Court Street to name an ARPA project in Southeast Ohio, they couldn't. Here are just a few👇 -the Athens Armory being turned into communal work spaces -the New Leaf program for survivors of trauma and abuse -the Ross County Community Resource Center -literally every Appalachian Community Grant (ACG) project -and now, the Sunset Motel in Athens being turned into an emergency shelter That last one is what today's post is about. Local organizations have been sounding the alarm for some time about the dwindling supply of housing in the area. They say not enough housing = more homelessness. Well, homelessness is indeed rising in Athens, and yet there isn’t a single emergency shelter in the entire county. That means more people sleeping in cars or camping outside, which causes all kinds of other problems. If we had an emergency shelter, experts say, it would be easier to connect these people with services, make sure they’re keeping up with treatment (if applicable), and help them figure out a path forward. Now an Ohio Dept. of Development grant from the HOME-ARP program (ARP = American Rescue Plan) is making that a reality. HAPCAP and its partners will use the grant to convert the Sunset — a familiar sight to anyone driving in or out of town via Columbus Road — into non-congregate emergency shelter. And they're hoping the community will get involved. You can find out more in the story I wrote for WOUB Public Media and Report for America: https://lnkd.in/eDqy2pr4 And if you also think ARPA projects are under-reported, do us a favor and share the story, please🤝 #arpa #americanrescueplan #localjournalism #homelessness #development

🏠 Monarch Family Associates, led by CEO Taiisa Kelly, is making a significant impact with a $1.25 million grant from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund. Recently, Taiisa joined me on WDHA's "Jersey Magazine" to discuss the crucial initiative. 📈 Recent reports show a concerning rise in family homelessness in the U.S., with families now constituting over 28% of the homeless population. Monarch Housing Associates aims to combat this trend by utilizing the grant to assist homeless families across New Jersey. 🔍 The grant will fuel the implementation of a statewide Strategic Plan to End Family Homelessness, focusing on expanding Rapid Rehousing services for families in need. Additionally, Monarch plans to establish regional hubs to guide families in accessing essential services and benefits for housing stability. Let's support Monarch Family Associates in their mission to provide vital assistance to families experiencing homelessness and work towards a brighter future for those in need. #EndFamilyHomelessness #CommunitySupport

Using a church to house homeless people at night can serve several important purposes. Here are some key points to consider: 🌍As a community resource: Churches often have the space and facilities needed to provide shelter, including large meeting rooms and restrooms. This can make them an ideal location for temporary housing. 🛡️As a safe environment: Many churches foster a sense of safety and community, which can be comforting for individuals experiencing homelessness. They often have a supportive atmosphere and may already be involved in outreach programs. 🍽️ Access to Services: Churches can connect individuals with essential services, such as food, counselling, and job assistance, helping to address the underlying issues of homelessness. 🤝Volunteer Support: Many congregations are willing to mobilize volunteers to help run a shelter, providing meals, supplies, and companionship to those in need. #crisissupport #homelessness #church #safe #crisis #support #problemsolving 🔄 Flexibility: Churches can adapt their space to accommodate different needs, whether it’s providing cots, blankets, or other resources. 🚨 Addressing Urgent Needs: With many people facing housing instability, churches can play a critical role in offering immediate relief during harsh weather or economic downturns. 🌱 Community Engagement: This initiative can foster a stronger connection between the church and the community, raising awareness of homelessness and encouraging more people to get involved in solutions. Overall, repurposing a church as a night time shelter can be a compassionate response to a pressing social issue, creating a safe haven for those in need while promoting community solidarity.
