It's real estate fact wednesday. The Wyckoff House or Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House has been standing since 1652, making it the oldest building in New York City. It was declared a National historic landmark in 1967. The house is now a museum. Coordination meeting for the World Heritage bid of “Colonial Urban Plan and Fortifications of the Walled City of Manila” hosted by the Intramuros Administration with the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and National Museum of the Philippines. Aside from moving forward with the dossier, there are plans to investigate the full scale of the walls since the exposed area is less than half the original height, with much of the original fortifications and surrounding moat buried during the American colonial period.

RIGHT: Auckland, in NZ’s North Island, has outstandingly beautiful views you can enjoy from the iconic Sky Tower. Its harbour is full of superyachts, no wonder its nickname is ‘The City of Sails’.  ❓ Look at the 2 buildings. One is the former home of the famous English naturalist, Charles Darwin. The other one is a free-standing house in the city of Darwin in Northern Australia. Now the question is: which is which?

I believe 1 plus 1 adds to more than 2. I believe it adds to 2.024 or 2.6 and sometimes to 3. I believe in the unique contribution of each individual in adding to the collective advancement of a larger cause. And in that, I believe the summation of the whole is always greater than the sum of the parts. And this is the ethos that has philosophized my creative journey since I started. In 2015, I knew that the city of Dar es Salaam had to be archived. Everything was changing, and it was everywhere and every day. The city started to undergo major and rapid transformations that I have never witnessed in my three decades of living in Tanzania. To preserve and reflect on these transformations, I started to photograph the people, their living conditions, the culture they have and the everyday life of everywhere I went in the city. In 2019, collectively with local storytellers from various parts of the city with whom I shared the same vision, we started contributing to archiving the city through Striti za Bongo. Striti za Bongo is the way we claim, celebrate and share the growth of the city of Dar es Salaam, and the larger narrative of 'Africa is Rising'. It's also the way we are stepping forward to participate in the emergence of contemporary art in Africa.
