📢 Exciting news! 📢 A MHHA backed bill to create a Palliative Care Advisory Task Force was introduced today by Senator Rosemary Bayer. The bill, Senate Bill 1180, establishes a 13-member advisory task force comprised of palliative care clinical experts, patient representatives, insurers, and leaders from relevant fields. If signed into law, the task force will: -Define "palliative care" for Michigan. -Conduct research to improve care delivery. -Develop strategies to expand palliative care access and reimbursement models. -Provide recommendations to enhance public education on palliative care and empower individuals to make informed care decisions. -Publish an annual report identifying existing services and gaps in care statewide. This legislation has been worked on for most of the year by our Palliative Care committee, Senator Bayer, and her staff, and we are thrilled to see it's introduction.

The recent SHA/SHIF implementation announcement hit close to home for me. A few months ago, I lost my mother, who was a dialysis patient. Kidney failure or end stage renal disease is a life altering condition. Dialysis becomes part of your routine. This process can be physically and emotionally draining, not only for the patient but also for the loved ones. The journey was long! So as I processed the news about the October rollout of SHA/SHIF my thoughts immediately went to all the patients at her former dialysis unit. Faces and stories I came to know during her treatment journey. If there is one thing I will always be grateful for is - NHIF. It paid for her two weekly sessions totalling to Ksh 19,000. Did you know that SHA/ SHIF has an even better plan in place? It has increased the sessions to a maximum of 3 in a week and a total amount of Ksh 30,000. The implementation challenges however keep me awake at night. (Story for another day) As we watch the the implementation unfold, let's use this moment to reflect on our own healthcare planning. Sometimes, the best way to honor those we've lost is to help others prepare for what we weren't ready for. #MedicalInsurance #CriticalIllnessCover #HealthcarePlanning #KenyaHealthcare

Savings of this magnitude can very rarely be planned and delivered in a 12 month period. The NHS needs to accept that the systemic change needed to deliver savings safely does not happen within the 12 month budget cycle. It is usually associated with multi year programmes. Slash and burn savings do not usually deliver sustainable solutions. https://lnkd.in/ecvFpm_x

🚨 Life-Threatening Emergency: Immediate MedEvac Response in Action A patient in a critical situation at a private hospital in the Caribbean is in urgent need of tertiary care and life-saving blood products that are unavailable locally. Today I discovered something surprising (and frustrating) regarding my regular blood tests as a Type 1 diabetic. If I have my HB1aC blood test done for my GP records, my Diabetic Consultant can access the results without issue. However, if the test is done on a form supplied by my consultant-led form (which it generally is as they often test for other things too), my GP apparently can’t see the results! And as my GP apparently has to make sure I am keeping healthy, they’d need me to take the same blood test again for them to have the same results on record. And…if I refuse (which I often do because I never understood that they couldn’t see my results) they keep writing me a letter to remind me I need to have the blood test as they have to prove they have done their best. Why on earth can’t they just access the consultant led blood test results ? This feels like an unnecessary and time-wasting barrier for both patients and healthcare providers. I can only imagine how many resources go into managing these inefficiencies on a larger scale. Surely someone in the NHS must have some ideas on how they might streamline information sharing between healthcare teams to avoid scenarios like this? #Healthcare #Efficiency #Type1Diabetes #PatientExperience
