🔒 In honor of National Safe Schools Week (October 21-25, 2024), it's important to highlight the ongoing safety challenges campuses face. According to stats compiled by Axon, there were over 27,300 crimes reported on postsecondary education campuses during 2019 and 2020. That’s almost 19 crimes per 10,000 students—ranging from assaults to vehicle thefts. To help deter these incidents, many U.S. campuses rely on blue emergency phones, also known as blue light boxes. These systems provide an essential layer of safety, offering students and staff quick access to emergency help. Is your campus security up to date? I am super excited by the news coming out of Clarksville Tennessee and standing up their Security Operations Center which ties into the video feeds of numerous schools giving them real time eyes on for situational awareness. Fox2Sierra, LLC was in Clarksville a little over a year ago delivering one of our ASESS Boards to a school in that community. I can't say that I am surprised with the innovative ways and forward thinking of their leadership. It is actually quite refreshing. In my humble opinion, this is merely the tip of the iceberg. AI and tech driven solutions will be at the forefront of security in the civilian sector just as it is taking over the defense sector. We have been investing a lot of time and energy into tech and really immersing ourselves in that world and can speak to its benefits and positive impact on security. I have said this before, and I still stand by it, I believe that Fox2Sierra, LLC is the first to deploy TAK PAR Government in a school setting. TAK is an advanced platform that offers the most robust common operating picture allowing for multiple plug ins from situational awareness, communication, picture and live video streaming to all be brought into one central location allowing for easier and more effiicient data collection and processing cutting down on evaluation decision making and response. If anyone can connect us with the Clarksville Security Operations Center we would be most appreciative. It is really important for school leaders to understand that if they implement entry point weapons screening of all students or all people entering a facility, they need to see that they meet the legal standard of care should someone manage to get a weapon into the facility and harm someone. In some cases, the failure to address the potential for people bypassing the checkpoints can create more civil liability exposure than not conducting screening. Kevin's question is an important one to consider, particularly if your district has invested in AI weapons detectors that have not been validated as reliable through testing from a reputable independent laboratory.
Did you create and implement an access control plan before adding weapon screening? If not, according to Campus Safety Magazine nearly a quarter of you are in that boat. As someone who has been there done that, it would be my pleasure to help create the access control plan. #schoolsafety #schoolsecurity #weaponscreening The Cook & Boardman Group, LLC https://lnkd.in/gyDu5K4K

As we continue to face the threat of school shootings across the nation, including tragic recent events, school safety remains a pressing concern. Many districts, particularly in Connecticut, have responded by implementing advanced security technologies like panic buttons, emergency alert systems, and advanced communication protocols. These measures, while critical, are only as effective as the human systems they support. At Trident Group America, we understand that technology doesn't work in a vacuum. It enhances human efforts but cannot replace the role of well-trained personnel and comprehensive preparedness plans. School security must blend cutting-edge tools with human expertise to provide a holistic approach. As Dan Maxwell, a former Madison police officer, emphasized, schools today must be equipped not just with technology but also with the right strategies to ensure rapid, coordinated responses in emergencies. Communication systems, in particular, are the cornerstone of effective school safety. Instantaneous sharing of information between schools, families, and first responders can make a life-or-death difference in critical moments. Yet, as experts like Ken Trump have pointed out, it’s essential to avoid "security theater"—relying on flashy, high-tech solutions without ensuring the basics are in place, such as functioning radios, trust between students and staff, and clear crisis protocols. At Trident Group, we focus on integrating advanced technology like the Direct Action Response Assessment System (DARAS) with human expertise. Our DARAS solution is designed to streamline communication, enhance decision-making during emergencies, and provide a framework for schools to respond effectively. However, it's the training and preparedness of school staff, security personnel, and local responders that ultimately make these tools truly powerful. We’re here to help school districts balance the latest technology with the human capital necessary to keep students and staff safe. No parent wants to worry about their child's safety when sending them to school. Unfortunately, that worry is a reality for parents across the nation. In New York City, schools are ramping up their security protocols, investing in new systems like cameras, intercoms, and door-locking mechanisms to protect students. The response from communities has been mixed — some are grateful for the enhanced measures, while others are concerned about the restrictive atmosphere a locked-down school may signal to students and parents. What we know is this: schools must be places where young people are not only protected from threats but can learn comfortably without distraction. I encourage you to learn more about the changes as we work to make our schools and neighborhoods safe places for quality learning: https://lnkd.in/ePySwpvF
NYC schools are spending $92 million on front door-locking systems. Parents have mixed feelings.

Defining access control can get pretty complicated if you let it, so this post will attempt to keep things straightforward and easy to understand. In simplistic terms, access control is a security technique that is used to allow or restrict people from gaining entry to a building or resource. Schools have to deal with many issues today such as drug deals, shootings, and gang violence. Hence, officials must think outside of the box to discover ways to keep visitors, students, and faculty members safe. https://lnkd.in/eyriZ7EV

The connection to this segment of The Lead with Jake Tapper lies in my keynote address at the Association of Christian Schools International's 2024 Public Policy and Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. ACSI, which accredits Abundant Life Christian School. In September and during this segment, I included tactics on how schools can balance cost-effective security solutions with larger investments like bulletproof doors and advanced security and communication systems. Key Takeaways: 1️⃣ Security Discussions at ACSI Conference Then and Now I emphasized the importance of taking both "baby steps," like locking doors and monitoring students' well-being, and "big steps," such as installing bulletproof glass or magnetometers, based on each school's resources. 2️⃣ Message to Parents Parents and guardians, I want to reassure you that, despite the fear surrounding school shootings, schools remain one of the safest environments for children compared to homes when it comes to gun violence. Open communication with your children about preparedness—without fostering fear—is a crucial step. 3️⃣ Proactive Measures The most powerful tool we have is awareness. FBI research shows that 92% of school shooters shared their plans with classmates beforehand. This underscores the importance of encouraging students to speak up if they see or hear something concerning. 4️⃣ Innovative Solutions in School Security From bulletproof doors to advanced entry systems, innovative technologies are emerging to help schools protect against potential threats. Let’s continue working together to ensure our schools remain safe, nurturing spaces for all students. One of the most critical things I work with clients in this space is having clear concise communication with all stakeholders in the event of an incident. This includes internal and external stakeholders. Managing the narrative of an incident is vital for any incident commander and their public information officer. #incidentmanagement #criticalcommnication
Teachers and students walked out of Wilmer-Hutchins High in Dallas yesterday to protest failures by campus administration to prevent the shooting inside a classroom on Friday morning. English teacher Tyree Dean and says the school failed teachers, students, and parents. "I had to find out the information via social media. Because there was no proper internal communication to let me know that my life was in danger." "[Administrators] want them to go inside because they don't want this to be disruptive. This needs to be disruptive. We should not go back to business as usual," Dean said. Wilmer-Hutchins High as clear backpack requirement, metal detectors, SROs, armed guards, and received funding from Texas' $2.5 billion dollar investment in physical security at schools after Uvalde. A key point is the DOJ report on Uvalde found that staff did not received emergency notifications from the school about a shooter on campus. 2 years later, teachers at one of the largest and best funded school districts in the state are having the same problem with emergency notifications.
