Rendering surface scans from photogrammetry for yourself or your team? If you rely on 2D height-to-normal conversions, you're losing detail and creating physically inaccurate edges. Consider this animated GIF of a bath towel scan normal map. Using a 2D height to normal process creates unwanted edge interpolations or noisy edging that simply do not exist in the scan. The rounded, bulbous part of the towel suddenly has a sharp edge as if it's a brick. The soft knit corner will contain saw-tooth sharp normals. The only way to get natural normal map is to bake the geometry normal with the color and height and process all 3 through your workflow. This is why we at Matterfield process surface scans with the original normal map from the geometry all the way through the pipeline for the best-looking surfaces. #photogrammetry #3d #rendering #videogames #vfx #surfacescans #3dartist

Drafting a sci-fi scene in Blender! This project features a lush, Earth-like planet as the centerpiece, surrounded by towering, futuristic skyscrapers. I'm using Blender's powerful particle systems to generate a cityscape teeming with towering structures. This allows for incredible detail and efficiency, creating a vast array of unique buildings that hug the alien landscape surrounding the Earth-like planet. The centerpiece of this sci-fi environment is an Earth-like planet brought to life with a combination of procedural textures. By utilizing a Voronoi texture for the base, I'm adding a touch of organic irregularity. Noise textures provide additional detail, and a color ramp refines the color scheme. The Principled BSDF shader offers precise control over the planet's material properties, with an Emission node adding a subtle internal glow. Finally, a Mix Shader allows for further customization, ensuring the planet feels truly unique within this futuristic scene. Engine: Cycles Device: GPU Compute Render: 100 samples (per frames) Frames: 250 #b3d #scifi #environment #3dart #blendercommunity #proceduraltextures #voronoitextures #noisetextures #colorramp #principledbsdf #emissionshader #mixshader #materialnodes
