Selected Works We are pleased to present a small series of selected master's theses and student projects that have been created with our support in recent years. The works not only demonstrate very convincingly the high standard of many works by architecture students at the UdK Berlin, but also provide a good example of the diversity and innovative power that can arise from the overlapping of creative and academic practice. At the same time, they are also an example of a departure and rethinking in architecture towards a performance-orientated and knowledge-based design of people's physical spaces and a sustainable architectural practice that is fit for the future. We would like to start with the work of Valentin Warminski: Rethinking Affluent Buildings The master's thesis, which was awarded the Max Taut Prize, shows the potential of building on through repair as an intervention and design practice. The search for minimalist interventions results in surprisingly strong design solutions. https://lnkd.in/dFhJKm5z #performance_orientated; #knowledge_based_design; #sustainable_architectural_practice

FORM FOLLOWS LIFE REINVENTING CITIES DEADLINE 31st August 2024 DESIGNING FOR LIFE Imagine a city where every design element honors and enhances the intricate web of life. What If Form Followed Life? This competition invites to reimagine urban spaces through the lens of life’s relationality - a concept that sees all forms of life as interconnected and interdependent. By designing with nature, not just for nature, cities can become ecosystems that support various forms of life. This involves more than just conservation; it's about cohabitation. Transitioning to this new model requires a collective reimagining of what urban spaces are for, and what they could become. It challenges the still dominant economic-efficient-human-centric models of urban planning, advocating instead for a design philosophy that respects and enhances the web of life. To actualize this vision, a shift in both mindset and methodology is essential. Planners, architects, and all stakeholders in urban development must embrace a more integrative approach to design - one that prioritizes long-term ecological health and the well-being of all urban residents, human, plants and animal. COMPETITION OVERVIEW This competition is a call to break the ideological and physical barriers between the built and the natural environments. It's about imagining a city that cares, heals, and grows with all its life/forms - human and other-than-human. Also questions the old separation between life and urban context. We are calling for ideas that integrate life deeply and meaningfully into urban settings, transforming cities into spaces that promote health, diversity, and connection between all forms of life. ELIGIBILITY Non Architecture Competitions are open to all human beings, from every age and cultural background, working in groups or individually. The registration fee is paid per team, regardless of how many members form it. Personal information of all the team members can be uploaded during the submission procedure of the final drawing. INFORMATION RELATED TO THIS COMPETITION · Title Form Follows Life: Reinventing Cities · Type: Competition Announcement (Ideas) · Website: https://lnkd.in/esfvgkJw · Organizers: NonArchitecture Competitions · Registration Deadline: August 31, 2024 11:59 PM · Submission Deadline: August 31, 2024 11:59 PM · Price: Free

Worth reading!!
Thank you Horizons Magazine (The 🇨🇭 research magazine, powered by @swissnationalsciencefoundation and @swiss_academies) for the nice piece covering our recent publication! “Architecture should take into account how people function cognitively”, says Michal Gath-Morad. She’s the lead author of a study conducted by a team of researchers from ETH Zurich and the University of Cambridge. They placed 149 people in a virtual environment with multilevel buildings and asked them to search for specific rooms. By tracing the paths taken by their test subjects, Gath-Morad found that they were more efficient in their search when there was a good line of sight to the stairwell from everywhere in the building. In the illustration here, we see the paths taken by participants searching for an office (different search strategies are given in blue and red; black signifies a single path). Gath-Morad, M., Grübel, J., Steemers, K., Sailer, K., Ben-Alon, L., Hölscher, C., & Aguilar, L. (2024). The role of strategic visibility in shaping wayfinding behavior in multilevel buildings. Simone Sfriso has been invited to the UMA Talks at the UMA, Umeå School of Architecture, Sweden on 20 September to discuss the social role of architecture. In recent years, extreme global events (pandemic, wars, climate crisis) are making the lives of marginalized communities even more precarious. As architects, it is crucial that we take into account social dynamics, needs and expected impacts, especially when it comes to building hospitals, schools, green spaces, neighbourhoods and shared spaces. "Architecture? Studying architecture isn’t just about where you stick the walls and windows, it’s about sticking your nose into everything, and I mean *everything.* You think it's all about designing spaces? Nope! You’re studying history, psychology, physics, art, sociology, and human nature—all under the umbrella of deciding where the bathroom goes. It messes with your head. Architecture takes that little hamster in your brain, puts it on a treadmill, and makes it sprint through *every* idea humanity's ever had. Studying it doesn't just teach you how to shape buildings; it reshapes *you.* It's a one-way ticket to looking at the world like it’s both a masterpiece and a project that still needs a million fixes. And by the end of it, you realize: it’s not just about making spaces *look* good; it’s about making life *work.*”
