Well, you've been hearing me talk about ATSC 3.0, the proposed next generation of TV broadcasting in the US, for about a decade now. Seriously. Check out all these articles. If it becomes the law of the land, ATSC 3.0 offers on-demand programming, 4K, and interactive features using an off-the-air antenna. (More on that in a minute.) But what kind of antenna will you need? #antennas #atsc3

5G technology is still lacking commercial use cases for broadcasters – that's one of the conclusions of our Caretta Research Analyst Insight on the state of 5G for broadcasters, published in partnership with IBC - International Broadcasting Convention. Despite extensive trials and POCs of 5G for contribution and outside broadcast, we are yet to see widespread commercial implementation. And with public mobile networks often providing insufficient bandwidth for reliable broadcast contribution, broadcasters are deploying private 5G networks and dedicated slices of public networks instead. Latency and network stability issues still need to be resolved, creating significant opportunities for vendors to step-in and create solutions to solve these challenges. 🔗 Read the full 5G in broadcast report in partnership here https://lnkd.in/e29it9h8

5G Broadcast and ATSC 3.0 were among the standards considered by Brazil for next generation TV. Brazil a country with 80% over the air (OTA) viewership could be a model for when OTA is a priority. After four years of testing, Brazil’s SBTVD Forum implied that 5G Broadcast has potential but still has a way to go. Phase 1 of Brazil’s testing (2020-2021) lab tested four candidate standards to see if they could meet Brazil's requirements. Phase 2 testing (2023-2024) field tested the all-important physical layers (which send broadcast signals through the air). Before Phase 2 testing began 5G Broadcast and DTMB-A (the Chinese standard) were eliminated from consideration. Physical layer testing was done on ISDBT-2 (Japanese standard) and ATSC 3.0. Read the 123-page detailed technical report on Phase 1 testing where 5G Broadcast and DTMB-A were eliminated: https://lnkd.in/gjgPXWAD A concise review of this point in time was included in the Faultline newsletter edition #1008 published 10-19-2023: “The unanimous selection of ISDB-T and ATSC 3.0, by the SBTVD Forum and Mackenzie University, is not surprising given the extensive tests already seen from Phase 1 commencing 2020, and selection of elements from the two broadcast mechanisms already seen in Phase 2. What we do find surprising is that fledgling 5G Broadcast technology was even considered alongside these two comparatively established broadcast technologies. That 5G Broadcast even made it this far is a positive sign for the movement, but evidently 5G Broadcast is not yet mature enough to be selected for trials of SBTVD 3.0’s physical layer.” For a subscription to Faultline, or a sample copy of Faultline edition #1008 quoted above contact Roz Hilton at Faultline. #atsc3 #5gbroadcast #brazil #sbtvdforum #faultline

This is big. Brazil - a market of over 71 million households with at least 1 TV set - has decided to adopt the ATSC 3.0 physical layer. One of the very first #NextGenTV features that Brazil adopted was Advanced Emergency Information, a service that we had a key role in introducing. NextGenTV will provide enormous benefits to the people of Brazil, and we're hoping that Advanced Emergency Information will enhance the "first informer" role of Brazilian broadcast #television. Cudos to the untiring work of Madeleine Noland, Skip Pizzi and so many others in ATSC that showed the value of the next gen broadcast standard. https://lnkd.in/e8WKSE4v

TV antennas might seem like a relic of a bygone era, when the number of channels you received could be counted on one hand. But as people look for ways to trim their ever-escalating cable and streaming TV bills, digital TV antennas are making a comeback. In fact, about 20 percent of all households with broadband access now use an antenna, according to research firm Parks Associates. Consumer Reports evaluates indoor TV antennas of all shapes and sizes. This year, we tried indoor antennas in two locations in the New York metro region. We found that both locations were able to receive dozens of free over-the-air channels. (Outdoor antennas tend to perform even better, but they’re not practical for everyone.)https://lnkd.in/g-ayDiYa

In the interview Chris explains how, like a Swiss Army Knife, which is known for its versatility, a comprehensive platform for live video delivery should allow users to manage a range of workflows, all within a unified system. By using a comprehensive platform with tools for managing video workflows, protocols, and formats, broadcasters can deliver quality content to the right destination in the right format. 🗞️ Read the full article on pg. 45 to learn more about fully utilizing IP to simplify live video delivery and enable flexibility and scalability: https://lnkd.in/ex72Js7D

Ever wondered how TV crews capture crystal-clear footage during heavy rain or snowstorms? The secret lies in a clever piece of technology called the Rainaway TV lens. This innovative lens spins rapidly, effectively flinging away rain and snow droplets, ensuring a clear and uninterrupted view. This lens has revolutionized outdoor broadcasting, enabling TV crews to capture high-quality footage, regardless of the weather conditions. It's a testament to the fact that sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective. By addressing a common problem with a clever engineering solution, this lens has proven to be an invaluable tool for broadcasters worldwide. Centrifugal force for the win!
