🎃 👻 "Silent Hill 2: A Case Study in Psychological Horror and Game Design Innovation" ⛰ 👻 A remake of Silent Hill 2, developed by Bloober Team, is set to be released on October 8, 2024. Available on the platfoms PlayStation 5 & PC. This remake promises enhanced graphics, an over-the-shoulder camera perspective, and expanded environments, while retaining the original’s acclaimed story. It remains a benchmark in the horror genre due to its compelling narrative, psychological depth, and atmospheric design. The game follows James Sunderland, a widower who travels to the eerie town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his deceased wife, Mary. The letter suggests that Mary is waiting for him in the town, despite having been dead for some time. As James searches for his wife, he encounters disturbing creatures, unsettling characters, and a series of horrifying revelations that challenge his perception of reality. Key Features: Psychological Horror: Unlike its predecessor, which focused on cult activities, Silent Hill 2 delves deeply into the psychology of its characters, exploring themes of grief, guilt, and redemption. Atmosphere and Design: The game is renowned for its haunting atmosphere, disturbing monster designs, and use of symbolism. The foggy, desolate town of Silent Hill adds to the sense of dread and isolation. Multiple Endings: The game features several different endings, influenced by the player’s actions and decisions throughout the story. Soundtrack: Composed by Akira Yamaoka, the soundtrack is a standout element, enhancing the game’s eerie and emotional tone. If you enjoy psychological horror games with deep, emotional narratives, Silent Hill 2 is definitely worth exploring. Have you played any other games in the Silent Hill series? Let’s rewind to the late '80s and '90s when video games weren’t just a pastime, they were a pop culture revolution. One gem that defined this era? Prince of Persia (1989), where the action was smooth, the stakes were high, and the graphics were...well, cutting-edge for the time. The secret sauce? Rotoscoping magic! Designer Jordan Mechner brought realism to the game's movements by tracing over video footage, his younger brother’s leaps and bounds (imagine being immortalized as the OG pixel prince!), and even classic Errol Flynn stunts. Talk about a mashup of family effort and silver-screen inspiration! Fast forward to today, and gaming tech has leaped light years ahead. But something about those 90s games, the chiptunes, the pixel art, the simple yet epic storytelling, keeps us hooked. They’re more than just games; they’re time machines. What’s your favorite memory of gaming’s golden age? Drop your Player 1 nostalgia below! #Gaming #Marketing #Advertising #Animation #MotionGraphics #CorporateFilms

Exciting news! My recent paper exploring the use of visual design in predicting gameplay characteristics among players has been added as a preprint. Using a custom experimental map made in Warcraft III's map editor, I tracked player eye movements with an eye-tracker and found that poor visual design can significantly impact player performance. If you're interested in learning more about my findings, check out my paper at the following link: https://lnkd.in/dxxytDN2. #gaming #research #visualdesign

What is "IP"? If you work in entertainment, you see this term used a lot, but if you don't, you might not understand what this means. IP = "intellectual property". In legal terms, it can apply to anything created that has value, and it's generally used by the tech industry to mean anything proprietary that someone or a company has created. In entertainment, IP tends to refer to worlds. Something like Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Half-Life, or World of Warcraft -- these are all IPs. They are worlds comprised of characters, settings, storylines, and in the case of games, specific gameplay mechanics that deliver a player experience. (Although it's becoming more common to see game IPs expanded into new gameplay genres; a good recent example of this is Dead by Daylight expanding into the Dating Sim genre with "Hooked on You".) The main elements that tend to characterize game IP include: * Art style (the more iconic, the better) * World (time period, specific locations, architectural stylings, lore/backstory, history, factions, etc.) * Story (specific characters, plot lines, etc.) * Gameplay mechanics (in general an IP tends to fall within primary gameplay genres, ex: Halo (FPS), WoW (MMORPG), LoL (MOBA), etc., although as mentioned this tends to be a bit malleable and we do see genre-extensions, ex. Halo Wars is an RTS. Most successful IPs will have established themselves firmly in one genre before extending to another) * Fans The last one is key. You can have 100 untested IPs sitting in a folder on your desktop somewhere, but until you have an audience they are "dead", in the sense they are unproven. This is because the real value in an IP is the audience it brings with it. A strong IP can be adapted to other media/platforms. This is why we're seeing such interest in game IP adaptations to linear (film, TV, etc). The well has largely run dry on comic books, which is what drove the last entertainment IP "supercycle". Whereas a NYT best-selling novel might only sell 10k-50k copies in its first year, a modestly successful video game can sell 500k-1m copies in the first year, and many sell a lot more (the current darling, Black Myth: Wukong reportedly sold 10m copies in the first *three days*). Video game players tend to also be some of the most engaged consumers of entertainment in the world. Some of this relates to the medium's roots as interactive, highly participatory, and very "online". Gamers will invest 1000s of hours in their favourite worlds, and $100s to $1000s of per year on their favourite past-time. So, these are very sought after fans, as they will follow you and spend money across different experiences, and will recruit other people to their favourite fandom. Developing IP tends to be an expensive and time-consuming endeavour (of course there are always exceptions), and commercializing it even more so. But a strong IP has significant long-term value to you or your company, and you should be very protective of it.

Horror games live or die by their protagonists. A well-crafted lead can make all the difference in creating an immersive and terrifying experience. Even though I don't create any game characters, it's interesting for me to get into the mindset and learn from the best, especially when it comes to capturing the vibe and feeling of a game. This is something that translates to all aspects of game design. Check out this awesome article from Game Developer
