#ThrowbackThursday Red Hill residence, located on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula is a wonderful additions and alteration project, placed gently into a landscape of matured trees and surrounding vineyards. The clients desired an extension that would complement the rural setting while working within the structure of the former residence and accommodating their large interstate family. While the old home and its newly renovated form share a similar workable layout, the inhabitant experience has been reimagined through the clear definition of public and private spaces, simplified through the subtle shifting of openings and partitions and the addition of key unifying elements. The open living room has been shifted to the centre axis of the house and now guides one’s view through the communal space to the impressive rural setting beyond. The master suite is a dream retreat with its new location overlooking the tennis court, pool and pool house. A strongly wished for gym was converted from an existing barn on the property into this open, gorgeous, airy fitness room. The junction between old and new is distinct but fluid. A central spinal hallway links the two halves of the building with walls extending from front to back in a continuous line, creating a long, framed vista. Sound on 🔊 Discover the secrets… This is also my first time on camera so I’m a little shy! When we took on this Grade II Listed Apartment in Pimlico London it had not been touched since the 70s. This 2 bed 90m2 flat was badly planned and uncomfortable. We undertook a full and extensive renovation, obtaining listed building consent and reworking all of the interiors to create this incredible series of spaces. Storage was at a premium and we managed to fit in loads, despite it appearing minimal! Another tricky luxury was the new air conditioning system installed in the flat! Classically difficult to get with listed buildings, we found an excellent interiorised solution. As a result there are lots of little secrets in this flat, where we have cleverly tucked away compartments and features of the property! Watch to the end and we reveal one! 🍹 🎉 Working with listed buildings is quite a journey, particularly when a client’s aesthetic is really aligned with ours, and as such, quite contemporary. The permissions process is all about demonstrating value to the listed building. So, despite creating openings in historic masonry (councils hate this), you can (re)introduce historical features that bring the rooms back to a sense of their former glory. This project was in Westminster Council, who have the reputation of being particularly tricky to work in! We got there in the end 💪 and have delivered something we are so incredibly proud of! Most importantly, we are very grateful to our client, their patience, time, excellent taste, and their general dedication to beautiful design. 🙏 🙏 • Let us know what you think in the comments 💭 ⬇️⬇️🙌 • #openvolumestudio • #architecture #hometour #london #renovation #interior #interiordesign #interiorarchitecture #bespoke #light #dark #space #optimisedesign

Here are three facts about lean-to conservatories ✨🏠 ✔️ Space Efficiency: Lean-to conservatories are designed to maximise space and are ideal for homes with limited garden areas. Their sloped roof, which typically extends from the house to the edge of the structure makes them perfect for smaller properties or for creating additional living space without taking up too much yard space. ✔️ Versatile Design: Lean-to conservatories can be customised to match various architectural styles. They can feature a variety of materials, including uPVC, wood, or aluminum, and can be designed with different glazing options. This versatility allows homeowners to integrate the conservatory design with their existing home and garden aesthetics. ✔️ Energy Efficiency: Modern lean-to conservatories can be built with energy-efficient glazing and materials that help regulate temperature, making them comfortable to use year-round. When you’re working with expansive views, you want windows that maximize your sightlines without obstructing the beauty beyond. Horizontal sliding windows are the answer, offering large glass panels that slide effortlessly open to reveal uninterrupted panoramas. Aluminium horizontal sliders combine sleek, contemporary design with high-performance functionality, providing the perfect balance of aesthetics and practicality. Whether you’re overlooking a garden, a lake, or a cityscape, these windows let the view take center stage. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, horizontal sliding windows are incredibly space-efficient. Since the panels slide along a track rather than swinging in or out, they save valuable room, making them perfect for homes where space is at a premium. Their smooth operation and low-maintenance construction make them ideal for both modern urban apartments and sprawling rural homes. If you’re looking for windows that enhance your views without compromising functionality, horizontal sliders are the way to go. #HorizontalSlidingWindows #UninterruptedViews #SleekDesign #AluminiumWindows #ModernAesthetics #SpaceEfficient #PanoramicViews #FunctionalDesign #HomeInspiration #MaximizeSightlines #WindowDesign #LowMaintenance #ContemporaryLiving #UrbanApartments #RuralHomes #Duromax

This home transformation we designed, is dramatic and impressive. The "Before" photo shows a modest home with a simple facade, dated exterior, and minimal landscaping. In contrast, the "After" photo reveals a stunning, two-story home with an elegant design, featuring a welcoming porch, stone accents, modern windows, and a beautifully landscaped yard. The addition of a spacious, double-garage enhances both the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the home, creating a stylish and inviting residence. Explore more of our work on our website. Science tells us that spending more time in the great outdoors has a multitude of health benefits, but you don’t have to move to the country to feel closer to nature in your own home... Biophilic design involves incorporating elements such as natural patterns, colours, and textures, and making the most of natural light with windows and glazing, to make us feel better connected to nature. Pictured is a London townhouse project of ours that perfectly demonstrates these principles, with the results being a calming retreat amidst the hustle and bustle of central London. Some techniques to consider when upping the nature-connection of any urban space: • With the interiors, opt for earthy materials like wood, stone, and bamboo, as close to their original forms as possible, and fabrics made with natural fibres and dyes • Garden space is typically limited in city centre locations so explore any potential for incorporating a balcony garden or rooftop terrace into the property • Introduce plants of varying sizes and shapes throughout, using pots and planters that feel rustic and unprocessed • To maximize sunlight, beyond windows explore options for skylights and glass doors Want to discuss how our beginning-to-end architecture and interior design services can help transform your urban space into an oasis of natural calm? Design of Compact/ Small Decks - an extension of your living space outdoors Providing a comfortable space to unwind, entertain and enjoy the outdoors... Irrespective of the area available, an intimate sit out can be designed that will be a great addition to any residence. Space planning to incorporate a swing, a little area for seating, plants, a space to spread out the food are important, so you can use it as an entertainment space or a lounge area. Below is the photograph of a residence we had designed with a small intimate terrace for a family of 4, which is now the most used space by the family. We put together a palette of materials, like exposed brick, earthy colours, standing seam pitched roof, natural stone and large tall plants to create a warm space that is also functional. #deckdesign #sitoutdesign #residentialdesign #materiality #studiodecode #outdoorspacedesign #urbanliving

For a client seeking to expand their living space by extending it into the loft, we came up with a range of possibilities – including one that might surprise you. The brief was to convert the loft into a master suite with en-suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. The design involved opening up the roof to expand the usable space, increase headroom, add new glazing, and potentially allow for a small balcony. In drafting the proposed new elevation, we decided to go a bit off-piste and create a second, speculative version. This showed similar loft conversions and extensions on several neighbouring properties. Would it be simple to persuade a group of neighbours to coordinate their loft conversions? Probably not! But this kind of exercise is useful in showing what’s possible when designers, property owners and urban planners get creative and think outside the box. With so many family homes no longer meeting the needs of their occupants, new creative strategies are vital. And given the affordable housing crisis that Guernsey (like so many other regions) faces, we believe this kind of bold, inventive thinking is more important than ever.
