Neuschwanstein Castle, perched atop the Bavarian Alps in Germany, is one of the most iconic castles in the world, completed in 1886. Commissioned by King Ludwig II, this fairytale-like structure showcases a blend of Romanesque Revival and Gothic architectural styles, making it a symbol of romanticism and grandeur. One of the key engineering innovations of Neuschwanstein Castle lies in its foundation and location. Built on a rugged hilltop, the engineers had to clear the mountainside and create a solid foundation, employing cutting-edge 19th-century techniques to ensure stability. The strategic placement of the castle gives it a dramatic presence, yet required intricate planning and construction to withstand the harsh alpine weather. The castle's structure is supported by a steel framework, which was groundbreaking for its time. This framework provided additional strength to the otherwise massive stone structure, allowing for towering spires and intricate facades while maintaining durability. The integration of steel was a forward-thinking decision, ensuring the castle’s longevity. Neuschwanstein Castle stands not only as a romantic vision of medieval architecture but as a testament to the advanced engineering techniques of its time. Our larger works are in collaboration with #Architects, #LandscapeArchitects and #Engineers and can take years to come to fruition. Futurecity were appointed in 2015 to deliver a #CulturalStrategy for Mount Anvil’s #KeybridgeHouse residential development in Nine Elms 598 homes in partnership with A2Dominion Group. One of our recommendations was for an ambitious public art commission (which through selection process was) won by artist #TomPrice in collaboration with landscape architects Planit ie. Tom Price’s large scale landscape intervention celebrates the #HiddenRiver #Effra which historically ran under the site. It is in my opinion a great public artwork, which should be better known and a brave and imaginative commission by the developer Mount Anvil. It is well worth paying a visit. Great interview with Tom here https://lnkd.in/ef8fmD53 Extract. ”My inspiration was the story of the River Effra, the ‘Hidden River”…culverted in the 1800s, and continues to run beneath the site of Keybridge today…..creating a sculpture that could look as though it had been formed in some way by a moving body of water - as if the river had been busy carving out a secret passage through subterranean London….cutting through and revealing hidden layers of London history. One significant chapter of #Vauxhall history is the #LambethPotteries, which thrived on an industrial scale from the sixteenth until the nineteenth century. Italy produced some of the world’s most innovative and exciting Brutalist architecture, which is featured in a new book entiteld Brutalism in Italy: Concrete Architecture from the Alps to the Mediterranean Sea, with magnificent photographs by Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego (published by FUEL). Italian Brutalism — ranging from private homes to churches, cemeteries, and stadiums―across every region of the country is fully documented, demonstrating the pluralist approache to concrete architecture in Italy during the 70s. We learn that it was a way for architects to distance themselves from fascism, without rejecting the architectural modernism that had flourished during that era.

Biophilia connects us to place and landscape. We also know that place and landscape are both cornerstones of our Indigenous Australian culture. It raises an important question as to whether biophilic design can meaningfully connect the built environment to the world’s oldest living culture. Bunji Place, designed by fjmt Architects, is a community and arts building located in Narre Warren in suburban Melbourne. It explores this question specifically, through the use of many biophilic principles as well as the project's naming after Bunjil the Creator. The architects used a grand woven timber structure, with a sense of flow and movement, as the entry to the building. A generous gesture, enhancing light and a feeling of connectedness to the outside. The natural materiality and its formal reference to a wedge-tailed eagle have a direct relationship with the natural world and our indigenous history.
