Casa Alma was a dedicated exhibition unit created for CASACOR, São Paulo’s premier festival of architecture and interior design, designed to provide a sensory environment where visitors could reconnect with their senses. This physical space explored perceptions and feelings through carefully curated textures and spatial design. Visitors wore Apple Watches that captured their heartbeats and movements, which were transformed into real-time artworks inspired by the design elements within Casa Alma. André Mattos and Gabriel Santos (GAN) led the creative and technical development for the data-driven art, producing over 1,600 unique artworks based on visitors' biometric data during the event. This project was completed in collaboration with Midiadub, Melina Romano Studio, and Dexco. What it's about: Art generated from visitors' sensations. In The Making... Every year, the people on our beautiful planet discard 2.12 BILLION TONNES of stuff. Why don't we value these items more? If we were to understand more about what went into each product - the time people spent designing, developing, crafting items, or even working in non-fancy factories on a production line. Or the time it took for the planet to grow, nurture or create those materials we use to create them, as well as the people who risk their lives to extract these materials, the people who care for the trees we fell and everyone involved between there and the factories? If we understood the hard work by both people and nature, would we think twice about discarding them so readily? We have had such fascinating conversations in the curation of this exhibition as part of Material Matters 2024, starting next Wednesday 18th September. We've asked our handpicked exhibitors, commercial manufacturing companies of varying scales, to peel back the polished facade of their brands and tell us their real stories. Because we believe, that if you know how large companies create jobs sustaining whole communities, prevent traditional craftmanship from being lost from a region, or invest in products which prevent ill health, then maybe people will want to look after that product, reuse it, and save it from waste. On the Olympics Opening Ceremony. The event sought to incorporate urban spaces into its design, aiming for more city-centric celebrations. However, the grand scale of the setup might have exceeded the intimate interaction typically preferred in ceremonies and urban festivities, suggesting a need to reevaluate the configuration and vision to better align with people centered urbanist principles. Despite these challenges, the event showcased several highlights that effectively utilized the city's iconic settings. The fountain ballet along the Seine, set against a golden backdrop, was visually striking but did not fully capture the cityscape's grandeur. Gojira’s performance at the Castle showcased monumental architecture. The staging of a single horse flying over the river fell short of the setting’s potential—envisioning a larger group of riders might have better expressed a sense of French unity. Additionally, the remarkable lighting at the Eiffel Tower enhanced the spectacle, although its visibility was limited to a few. The event culminated with Celine Dion’s performance, which, while breathtaking, highlighted an ongoing issue: the lack of substantial at city visual elements that resonate with the city’s vast scale. This observation raises the question of whether the artistic vision of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s Paris installation could have inspired a proposal to wrap or at least mimic wrapping the urban scene. Such an approach could create a compelling narrative along the river's remarkable cityscape. Arkkitehdit NRT has successfully renovated Alvar Aalto's iconic Finlandia Hall, originally designed in 1971 for diverse events. This revitalization balances respect for Aalto's visionary design while introducing modern amenities and additional spaces, making it more accessible to both locals and tourists. As a designer, I often reflect on how crucial it is to preserve cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary needs. This project is an exemplary case of harmonizing the old with the new. Have you been involved in projects where heritage meets innovation? What challenges and successes did you experience? The renovation included the restoration of Aalto's original furnishings and improvements to the building's functionality. New features such as a restaurant, wine bar, and exhibition space have transformed Finlandia Hall into a vibrant leisure destination for everyone. Studies show that accessible cultural spaces can significantly improve community engagement and tourism.
