As someone deeply involved in business and leadership development, I’ve seen firsthand the resilience, innovation, and drive that Black women bring to the entrepreneurial space. Despite facing systemic barriers and a lack of access to traditional funding sources, these women are starting businesses at a faster rate than any other demographic group. The future of entrepreneurship lies in the hands of Black women, but to unlock their full potential, we must create equitable opportunities and resources tailored to their unique challenges. This means investing in their ventures, providing mentorship, and amplifying their voices. Here’s how you can make a difference: • Invest: Allocate funds specifically for Black women-led startups and businesses. • Mentor: Offer your time and expertise to guide and support emerging Black women entrepreneurs. • Amplify: Use your platform to highlight their achievements and share their stories. Did you know? Less than 1% of venture capital funding goes to Black women founders. In the PR industry, the numbers are even more stark. But sometimes, opportunity knocks when you least expect it. Last month, what was meant to be a self-care day at #EnvsnFest founded by Laura Stylez and Sharifa Murdock in NYC turned into an unexpected win for J.McKee & Co I walked into the festival seeking rejuvenation and walked out with renewed purpose and validation for our mission. In an impromptu pitch competition, I shared our vision for amplifying diverse voices in PR. The result? A $1000 prize and a powerful reminder that our passion and purpose resonate. This experience fills me with immense gratitude. Grateful for the platform that #EnvsnFest provides. Thankful for visionaries like Anisa Pennie Kadidja Dosso of Dosso Beauty and Foot Locker who create spaces where diverse entrepreneurs can shine. Someone recently asked me who I thought was most likely to succeed as an entrepreneur. I answered… mothers. Here’s why: - No one is more entrepreneurial than mothers. - No one does more with less. - No one handles pressure and stress better. - No one balances risk and reward more effectively. - No one wears more hats. - No one learns on the job faster. - No one has more emotional intelligence. - No one stays more focused on long-term goals. This might be why Latinas and Black women have started more businesses than any other group since 2020. And why they consistently over-perform—building, scaling, and succeeding with minimal investment. But here’s the challenge: Latina and Black women entrepreneurs—and nonprofits led by them—receive less than 1% of funding from public and private sources. Let that sink in. Latina and Black women are already over-delivering with almost no support. Imagine what they could achieve with equitable investment and resources. It’s time for investors—both debt and equity—and philanthropic organizations to take a hard look in the mirror and reassess their priorities. Latinas and Black women are proving every day that they are the future of entrepreneurship. The question is: Will we invest in that future? As a Black Female Founder, growing through guidance is crucial for success. Without proper guidance, it would be a hassle navigating the business landscape. Find experienced mentors who understand your journey and can offer valuable advice, connect with networks and be open to learning and pivoting when necessary.👌 It is also important you establish clear expectations with partners, investors, and team members, stay up-to-date on industry trends, build relationships with peers, investors, and potential customers. The power and expertise of Latina and Black women are shaping our future. We need to celebrate them today and every day. Here’s why: Despite a lack of access to social, technical and financial capital . . . Despite representing less than 3% of the technology workforce combined . . . Despite reporting that 85% of Latina and Black women experienced discrimination . . . And being turned down for promotions more than any other group . . . Despite that and other inequities . . . in the last few years . . . Over 350 Latina and Black founders have raised at least $1m in funding . . . and . . . Nine startups founded by Latina and Black women have become unicorns - a $1 billion or higher valuation  . . . and . . . Five companies have raised over $100 million . . . Including . . . * Honeybook, founded by first-generation Mexican-American entrepreneur Shadiah Sigala * Aura Biosciences, founded by Spanish entrepreneur Elisabet de los Pinos * Health IQ, founded by Mexican-American entrepreneur Alexandra Marshall   Obviously, we have so much work to do.
