When sales and revenue are low, here’s one thing that works: Stop what you were doing before. A client approached me last year because she had almost no revenue in the previous months. She had tried everything: asking for referrals running ads offering discounts to existing clients. I suggested the dreaded words: "Start by stopping what you are doing" When we create space for observation and analysis, we start seeing hidden patterns and trends. In this case, she recalled that several of her clients had expressed interest in a service she considered secondary. We tested that possibility. A turnaround occurred, and she has since built a highly successful business starting with that secondary service. We call this a pivot but it's essentially a surrender to the realization that the old approach isn't working anymore It does not help to push harder when something does not work. As we wrap up 2024, I've found myself reflecting on the lessons I've learned this year as an entrepreneur. One of the most profound areas of growth for me has been in my approach to selling—something that used to feel like a "dirty word." I think many of us hold biases about what selling is. We picture something pushy, insincere, or even manipulative. I know I carried these biases myself, and they held me back for years. This year, I worked to overcome them and develop a consultative approach focused on my customers and their challenges. What I discovered is that the more I stopped thinking about myself—my discomfort, my fears, my biases—and focused instead on how I could genuinely help others, the better I became at selling. It was less about convincing someone to buy and more about understanding where I could add value, where my expertise could make a difference. Part of this journey was realizing that I had been underestimating my own knowledge. With over 20 years of specialized product marketing experience, I've accumulated insights that not everyone has. This perspective helps me see solutions where others see problems—and embracing that allowed me to stand out from other marketing service providers. It transformed my sales conversations and, ultimately, my business. The result? A 200% growth in sales this year, and an unmeasurable boost in my confidence. Selling isn't about fitting into an outdated stereotype. It's about knowing your value, understanding others, and being confident that you have something meaningful to offer.
