Normet, SmartDrive and the path to electrification Five years is a long time in mining technology circles: a point Normet Group is reinforcing with the rapid rise of its #SmartDrive® #batteryelectric utility equipment platform. Also, the solution greatly reduces the amount of CO2 emitted or fuel consumed per cubic metre of concrete transported." Cavotec ready to drive mine electrification forward Cavotec’s rise in the #mineelectrification space was inevitable. Its origins as a designer and provider of connection & #electrification solutions in ports & industrial applications provided an obvious analogue for a mining sector on the lookout for such tech. On top of this, its electrification, #powerdistribution & #automation systems have previously been employed by many major miners & equipment OEMs. Since securing an order in 2022 that signalled its entry into industrial #batterycharging for heavy-duty vehicles for a mining application in Australia, Cavotec has gone on to launch its ultra-fast #MegawattCharging System (MCS) to provide up to 3 MW of power from a single connector. This turnkey #DCcharging solution with grid-to-inlet functionality supports industry decarbonisation. The MCS is also a modular solution, featuring either manual or automated connection to the vehicle inlet. It has three different power levels (350 kW, 1 MW, 3 MW) with an active #connector & cable cooling system (included in 1 MW and 3 MW chargers) and a vehicle inlet included in the 3 MW charger. A specified connector size & minimum weight is used depending on the power level while an advanced power management system incorporates user dashboards & controls the charging process. We spoke with #Cavotec’s Chief Technology Officer, Jim Andriotis, to find out more ahead of his appearance at The Electric Mine 2024, in Perth, Western Australia, taking place at the Crown Perth Complex, on May 21-23. This included discussion of where #staticcharging & its MCS fit into the large open pit mine application area. Andriotis had this to say: "Most open-pit applications will have equipment that has to move between pits, or pits to base. The large haul trucks are the prime example where they have a repetitive cycle and a waiting time where they can quickly take on energy. This is perfectly suited to the high-power charging system." He adds: "When we look at shovels, excavators & surface drill rigs, there may be a small percentage which will move to #batteryelectric but the majority will remain tethered by cable reel as they are staying primarily in the pit & only moving larger distances during major layout changes. In the end, electrification of these large haul trucks & pit equipment will need a variety of solutions. The #dynamiccharging systems in place work very well but are suited to larger, more mature mines where these throughways are fixed permanently (or almost permanently). In the end, both solutions have a place in mining, including together in some applications." Iron ore mining giant #Fortescue Energy says it expects to save 95 million litres of diesel a year from the full #electrification of its excavator fleet, after success in its first machine installed in December. The company announced in March that its first electric excavator had moved one million tonnes in the three months since it started operations at its Cloudbreak mine in the Pilbara, but it said on Wednesday that production rates had increased significantly with the addition of new equipment. Another two electric excavators are being installed at the Solomon mine, with one already in operation, and Mark Hutchinson, the head of Fortescue Energy, says they are proving to me more efficient that their diesel efficient. “Once we #decarbonise the entire excavator fleet, around 95 million litres of diesel will be eliminated every year,” Hutchinson told analysts and media in the company’s first quarter investor call. The excavator is powered by a 6.6kV substation and more than two kilometres of high voltage trailing cable. It is currently powered partly by solar – the nearby 60 MW #solarfarm at Chichester – but intends it to be powered 100 per cent by #renewablepower as the company rolls out more solar and #batterystorage facilities. Hutchinson also noted that the 240 tonne electric haul truck prototype, dubbed the Road Runner, has completed the first phase of its testing with the battery power system, which included laps around the testing track, ramp tests and hill starts while fully loaded. The company will now move on to trial another prototype, dubbed #Europa, before putting an electric haul truck into actual operations. “It’s a major milestone for bridging the gap between #zeroemission power systems and the diesel fleet, and proving that #decarbonisation is really possible,” Hutchinson says. “We are very excited and very happy with what the team has done.” Fortescue intends to reach “real zero” in its mining operations by 2030, which means burning no #fossilfuels in transport, operations and its power supply at its mine sites. It expects this will save more than 700 million litres of diesel a year.
