Meet our new team member, Anna Lukkarinen 🎉 A Postdoctoral Associate, she investigates how organizations can advance sustainability and well-being, nudge by nudge. Systems innovation appeals to her as a bold yet concrete approach to addressing complex real-world challenges. At Innovation North, she aims to push boundaries in both theory and practice. She brings a blend of academic rigor and industry experience. Before joining Innovation North, she worked on sustainability topics at Stanford University, Aalto University, and McKinsey & Company. Systems thinking challenges conventional linear thinking. For anyone interested in an analogy from physics, Anna highly recommends “Quantum Enigma: Physics Encounters Consciousness” by Bruce Rosenblum and Fred Kuttner. What is the common denominator between a Thai boxer, teacher, law & business graduate, and a Stanford Postdoc? 💪 👨🏫 🎓 All are new scientists joining the Weizmann Institute of Science, with varying starting times between 2023-2024. These individuals come from diverse backgrounds with rich experience both in and out of the scientific world. Some did not have straight paths towards scientific academia, however science found them. Pure curiosity was the driving force bringing these talented new scientists to the Institute, allowing for new perspectives to meld into the mosaic of scientific life on campus. People often ask me why I choose to work with these young minds despite having a PhD. The answer is simple: I want to inspire and mentor the next generation of scientists to sustain and advance the field of science. By guiding and nurturing their talents, we ensure that our collective knowledge and passion for discovery are passed on, creating more individuals who are dedicated to making meaningful contributions. Completely agree with the sentiment that the public (non-scientists) will, and should, be the main drivers of taking science from the "lab" (I guess non-applied settings?) into every day life. This is what businesses, community organisations and other such efforts are great at. The public #research system should be focused primarily on what happens in the lab - it generates and communicates knowledge, others use and innovate with that knowledge.
